We say that a star body $K$ is completely symmetric if it has centroid at the origin and its symmetry group $G$ forces any ellipsoid whose symmetry group contains $G$, to be a ball. In this short note, we prove that if all central sections of a star body $L$ are completely symmetric, then $L$ has to be a ball. A special case of our result states that if all

The Type~Ia supernova (SN~Ia) 2016coj in NGC 4125 (redshift $z=0.004523$) was discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search 4.9 days after the fitted first-light time (FFLT; 11.1 days before $B$-band maximum). Our first detection (pre-discovery) is merely $0.6\pm0.5$ day after the FFLT, making SN 2016coj one of the earliest known detections of a SN Ia.

The growing popularity of bike-sharing systems around the world has motivated recent attention to models and algorithms for their effective operation. Most of this literature focuses on their daily operation for managing asymmetric demand. In this work, we consider the more strategic question of how to (re-)allocate dock-capacity in such systems. We develop
Phenomenological analysis of associated production of $Z^0+b$ in the $b \rightarrow J/ψX$ decay channel at the LHC

The ATLAS collaboration recently reported on the first observation of associated-production of a $Z^0$ boson with a $J/ψ$. We recently claimed that the corresponding yield of the {\it prompt} $J/ψ$ was dominated by double parton scatterings in the ATLAS acceptance with a somewhat small value of $σ_{\rm eff}$. We also found out that single parton scatterings

We characterize waves in small magnetic elements and investigate their propagation in the lower solar atmosphere from observations at high spatial and temporal resolution. We use the wavelet transform to analyze oscillations of both horizontal displacement and intensity in magnetic bright points found in the 300 nm and the Ca II H 396.8 nm passbands of the f

One of the key applications for quantum computers will be the simulation of other quantum systems that arise in chemistry, materials science, etc, in order to accelerate the process of discovery. It is important to ask: Can this be achieved using near future quantum processors, of modest size and under imperfect control, or must it await the more distant era

We consider the problem of portfolio optimization in a simple incomplete market and under a general utility function. By working with the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman partial differential equation (HJB PDE), we obtain a closed-form formula for a trading strategy which approximates the optimal trading strategy when the time horizon is small. This strate

Triangular algebras, and maximal triangular algebras in particular, have been objects of interest for over fifty years. Rich families of examples have been studied in the context of many w$^*$- and C$^*$-algebras, but there remains a dearth of concrete examples in B(H). In previous work, we described a family of maximal triangular algebras of finite multipli

Changing a given configuration in a graph into another one is known as a re- configuration problem. Such problems have recently received much interest in the context of algorithmic graph theory. We initiate the theoretical study of the following reconfiguration problem: How to reroute $k$ unsplittable flows of a certain demand in a capacitated network from t

We study holographic isotropization of an anisotropic homogeneous non-Abelian strongly coupled plasma in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet corrections. It was verified before that one can linearize Einstein's equations around the final black hole background and simplify the complicated setup. Using this approach, we study the expectation value of the boundary

The purpose of this short note is to give a variation on the classical Donsker-Varadhan inequality, which bounds the first eigenvalue of a second-order elliptic operator on a bounded domain $Ω$ by the largest mean first exit time of the associated drift-diffusion process via $$λ_1 \geq \frac{1}{\sup_{x \in Ω} \mathbb{E}_x τ_{Ω^c}}.$$ Instead of looking at th

In computer vision pixelwise dense prediction is the task of predicting a label for each pixel in the image. Convolutional neural networks achieve good performance on this task, while being computationally efficient. In this paper we carry these ideas over to the problem of assigning a sequence of labels to a set of speech frames, a task commonly known as fr

We determine a supercharacter theory for the matrix Sylow $p$-subgroup ${^3}D_4^{syl}(q^3)$ of the Steinberg triality group ${^3}D_4(q^3)$, and establish the supercharacter table of ${^3}D_4^{syl}(q^3)$.
Coherent transport properties of a three-terminal hybrid superconducting interferometer

We present an exhaustive theoretical analysis of a double-loop Josephson proximity interferometer, as the one recently realized by Strambini et al. for the control of the Andreev spectrum via an external magnetic field. This system, called $ω$-SQUIPT, consists of a T-shaped diffusive normal metal (N) attached to three superconductors (S) forming a double loo

The changes on abiotic features of ecosystems have rarely been taken into account by population dynamics models, which typically focus on trophic and competitive interactions between species. However, understanding the population dynamics of organisms that must modify their habitats in order to survive, the so-called ecosystem engineers, requires the explici

The space of monic centered cubic polynomials with marked critical points is isomorphic to C^2. For each n>0, the locus Sn formed by all polynomials with a specified critical point periodic of exact period n forms an affine algebraic set. We prove that Sn is irreducible, thus giving an affirmative answer to a question posed by Milnor. (This manuscript has be

It is well known that the number of non-isomorphic unit interval orders on $[n]$ equals the $n$-th Catalan number. Using work of Skandera and Reed and work of Postnikov, we show that each unit interval order on $[n]$ naturally induces a rank $n$ positroid on $[2n]$. We call the positroids produced in this fashion unit interval positroids. We characterize the

We give a explicit description of gluing stability conditions on ruled surfaces by introducing gluing perversity. Moreover, we describe a destabilizing wall of skyscraper sheaves on ruled surfaces by deformation of stability conditions glued from $\widetilde{GL^{+}}(2,\mathbb{R})$-translates of the standard stability condition on the base curve.
