In this paper, we consider surfaces in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space E3 which are of finite III-type, that is, they are of finite type, in the sense of B.-Y. A hallmark of a thermodynamic phase transition is the qualitative change of system thermodynamic properties such as energy and heat capacity. On the other hand, no phase transition is thought to operate in the supercritical state of matter and, for this reason, it was believed that supercritical thermodynamic properties vary smoothly and without any qualitat

Current deep neural networks (DNNs) can easily overfit to biased training data with corrupted labels or class imbalance. Sample re-weighting strategy is commonly used to alleviate this issue by designing a weighting function mapping from training loss to sample weight, and then iterating between weight recalculating and classifier updating. Current approache
All-electron density functional calculations for electron and nuclear spin interactions in molecules and solids
cond-mat.mtrl-sciKrishnendu Ghosh, He Ma, Vikram Gavini, Giulia Galli
The interaction between electronic and nuclear spins in the presence of external magnetic fields can be described by a spin Hamiltonian, with parameters obtained from first principles, electronic structure calculations. We describe an approach to compute these parameters, applicable to both molecules and solids, which is based on Density Functional Theory (D

This paper argues that mathematical objects are constructions and that constructions introduce a flexibility in the ways that mathematical objects are represented (as sets of binary sequences for example) and presented (in a particular order for example). The construction approach is then applied to searching for a mathematical object in a set, and a logarit

We address the enumeration of planar 4-valent maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation by two different methods, and compare the solutions we thus obtain. With the first method we enumerate these orientations as well as a restricted class which we show to be in bijection with general Eulerian orientations. The second method, based on the work of Kostov, al

This report is the summary of the Eighth International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics (QNP2018). Hadron and nuclear physics is the field to investigate high-density quantum many-body systems bound by strong interactions. It is intended to clarify matter generation of universe and properties of quark-hadron many-body systems. The QNP is an internati

Human motion prediction from motion capture data is a classical problem in the computer vision, and conventional methods take the holistic human body as input. These methods ignore the fact that, in various human activities, different body components (limbs and the torso) have distinctive characteristics in terms of the moving pattern. In this paper, we argu
Surface-induced positive planar Hall effect in topological Kondo insulator SmB6 microribbons
cond-mat.mes-hallL. Zhou, B. C. Ye, H. B. Gan, J. Y. Tang
Whether the surface states in SmB6 are topological is still a critical issue in the field of topological Kondo insulators. In the magneto-transport study of single crystalline SmB6 microribbons, we have revealed a positive planar Hall effect (PHE), the amplitude of which increases dramatically with decreasing temperatures but saturates below 5 K. This positi
An Infrared Census Of Dust In Nearby Galaxies With Spitzer (DUSTiNGS): V. The Period-luminosity Relation For Dusty Metal-Poor AGB Stars
astro-ph.SRSteven R. Goldman, Martha L. Boyer, Kristen B. McQuinn, Patricia A. Whitelock
The survey for DUST In Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer (DUSTiNGS) has identified hundreds of candidate dust-producing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in several nearby metal-poor galaxies. We have obtained multi-epoch follow-up observations for these candidates with the Spitzer Space Telescope and measured their infrared (IR) lightcurves. This has allowed u
Numerical study of the temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate across the superfluid-Bose glass transition in one dimension
cond-mat.str-elMaxime Dupont
We study the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in random one-dimensional spin chains as function of the temperature and disorder strength. In the zero temperature limit, the system displays a disorder-induced quantum phase transition between a critical Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase and a localized Bose glass phase.

In this paper, first we study dual representations and tensor representations of Hom-pre-Lie algebras. Then we develop the cohomology theory of Hom-pre-Lie algebras in term of the cohomology theory of Hom-Lie algebras. As applications, we study linear deformations of Hom-pre-Lie algebras, which are characterized by the second cohomology groups of Hom-pre-Lie

In populations competing for resources, it is natural to ask whether consuming fewer resources provides any selective advantage. To answer this question, we propose a Wright- Fisher model with two types of individuals: the inefficient individuals, those who need more resources to reproduce and can have a higher growth rate, and the efficient individuals. In

In many applications, it is important to reconstruct a fluid flow field, or some other high-dimensional state, from limited measurements and limited data. In this work, we propose a shallow neural network-based learning methodology for such fluid flow reconstruction. Our approach learns an end-to-end mapping between the sensor measurements and the high-dimen

In this work we study how the non-Markovian character of the dynamics can affect the thermodynamic performance of a quantum thermal engine, by analysing the maximum power output of Carnot and Otto cycles departing from the quasi-static and infinite-time-thermalization regime respectively, introducing techniques for their control optimization in general dynam

We introduce a constrained priority mechanism that combines outcome-based matching from machine-learning with preference-based allocation schemes common in market design. Using real-world data, we illustrate how our mechanism could be applied to the assignment of refugee families to host country locations, and kindergarteners to schools. Our mechanism allows

This paper introduces a new resource allocation problem in distributed computing called distributed serving with mobile servers (DSMS). In DSMS, there are $k$ identical mobile servers residing at the processors of a network. At arbitrary points of time, any subset of processors can invoke one or more requests. To serve a request, one of the servers must move

$f(R)$ theory is a modification of Einstein general relativity which has many interesting results in cosmology and astrophysics. To derive black hole solution in this theory is difficult due to the fact that it is fourth order differential equations. In this study, we use the first reliable deviation from general relativity which is given by the quadratic fo
On the Solvability of Nonlinear Differential Equations Subject to Generalized Boundary Conditions
math.APBenjamin Freedman, Jesús Rodríguez
In this paper, we analyze nonlinear differential equations subject to generalized boundary conditions. More specifically, we provide a framework from which we can provide conditions, which are straightforward to check, for the solvability of a large number of nonlinear scalar boundary value problems. We begin by giving our general strategy which involves the

LoRa technology enables long-range communication with low-power consumption for the Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices in the urban and suburban environment. However, due to terrestrial structures in urban and suburban environments, the link distance of LoRa transmissions can be reduced. In this paper, we report signal strength measurements for the in-building
