Molecular-Dynamics Verification of Effective Gravity under Heat Conduction

Abstract
We test the effective-gravity prediction of global thermodynamics using standard molecular dynamics of a two-dimensional Lennard-Jones fluid. Under weak heat conduction with the lower boundary hotter than the upper boundary, the transition between liquid below gas and liquid above gas shifts from zero to finite downward gravity. Using independently measured equilibrium saturation pressures, we calculate the shift predicted by global thermodynamics and find agreement with the observed transition shift. The transition occurs at zero effective gravity, where the hydrostatic pressure difference balances the saturation-pressure difference between the two boundaries. The hysteresis response under heat conduction also agrees with the equilibrium response when plotted against effective gravity. These results establish the predictive power of global thermodynamics for nonequilibrium structure formation.
