Comparison of entangling strategies for unitary synthesis

Abstract
Trapped-ion quantum computers are promising as a platform for realizing quantum computational advantage. They promise long coherence times, near all-to-all connectivity, and potential multiqubit gates as distinguishing advantages compared to competing platforms. Regarding these advantages, it is crucial to understand the trade-offs between increasing engineering complexity and actual improvements in running quantum algorithms with a more flexible gate set. In this work, we investigate this question and develop a versatile toolset to evaluate the performance of gate sets composed of native Mølmer--Sørensen multiqubit gates. To this end, we employ unitary synthesis as an application-agnostic benchmark target and identify specific hardware requirements for multiqubit gates to be advantageous.
