Reconstructing string dualities through symmetries of moduli spaces
Ignacio Ruiz, Germán Varona
Abstract
We perform a bottom-up analysis of the possible duality descriptions characterizing the perturbative regimes associated to the asymptotic regions of quantum gravity moduli spaces. Our approach relies on the symmetries of such moduli spaces as scalar manifolds, as well as the Emergent String Conjecture, which constrains the possible towers of states becoming light, and thus the interpretation of the dual theories emerging at infinite distance. For supergravity theories with 32 and 16 supercharges, our reconstruction uniquely matches those duality frames associated to top-down toroidal compactifications of M-theory/Type II string theory and heterotic string theory, respectively. For theories with less supersymmetry, moduli spaces exhibit fewer symmetries, and quantum corrections can render certain directions of the classical moduli space inaccessible; nonetheless, we are still able to constrain the possible arrangements of dualities. While these are mostly realized by known top-down constructions, there are some intriguing additional possibilities which might lay in unexplored corners of the string landscape.
