Observation of (4S) decays to π+pi-(1S) and π+pi-(2S)

Abstract

We present the first measurement of (4S) decays to π+pi-(1S) and π+pi-(2S) based on a sample of 230×106 (4S) mesons collected with the BABAR detector. We measure the product branching fractions B((4S) π+pi-(1S))× B((1S)μ+μ-)=(2.230.25stat 0.27sys)× 10-6 and B((4S) π+pi-(2S))× B((2S)μ+μ-)=(1.690.26stat0.20sys)× 10-6, from which we derive the partial widths ((4S) π+pi-(1S))=(1.80.4)~keV and ((4S) π+pi-(2S))=(2.70.8)~keV.
