In this paper we present results for the ground state and low-lying excitations of the $S=1/2$ alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Our more conventional techniques include perturbation theory about the dimer limit and numerical diagonalization of systems of up to 28 spins. We review some aspects of the isotope effect (IE) in superconductors. Our focus is on the influence of factors not related to the pairing mechanism. After summarizing the main results obtained for conventional superconductors, we review the effect of magnetic impurities, the proximity effect and non-adiabaticity on the value of the isotope coefficient (IC).

Using the particular momentum conservation laws in dimension d=2, we can rewrite the Anderson model in terms of low momentum long range fields, at the price of introducing electron loops. Both the multiterminal conductance of an array of quantum dots and the persistent current of a quantum dot molecule embedded in an Aharanov-Bohm ring are calculated. The conductance and persistent curr

We investigate the influence of different kinds of structure on the learning behaviour of a perceptron performing a classification task defined by a teacher rule. The underlying pattern distribution is permitted to have spatial correlations. The prior distribution for the teacher coupling vectors itself is assumed to be nonuniform. Thus classification tasks

A simple, yet accurate solution of the electron-phonon coupling problem in C_{60} is presented. The basic idea behind it is to be found in the parametrization of the ground state electronic density of the system calculated making use of ab-initio methods, in term of sp$^{2+x}$ hybridized orbitals. This parametrization allows for an economic determination of

A Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction can be metastable if it is spatially confined and if the number of condensate bosons $N_0$ is below a certain critical value $N_{\rm c}$. By applying a variational method and the instanton techinique to the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional, we find analytically the frequency of the collective excitatio

Recently the superconductivity has been reported in the copper oxides (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ with ladders and edge-sharing chains under pressure. In order to understand the mechanism of the superconductivity, it is crucial to clarify the distribution of self-doped holes. From the analysis of the optical conductivity by ionic model and exact diagonal

The transport properties of a rectangular mesoscopic plaquette in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field are studied in a tight-binding model with randomly distributed traps. The longitudinal and Hall resistances are calculted in the four-probe Landauer-Büttiker formalism which accounts automatically both for the quantum coherence and the trapping-in

Free standing InP quantum dots have previously been theoretically and experimentally shown to have a direct band gap across a large range of experimentally accessible sizes. We demonstrate that when these dots are embedded coherently within a GaP barrier material, the effects of quantum confinement in conjunction with coherent strain suggest there will be a

We describe a simple variant of the interpolated Markov model with non-emitting state transitions and prove that it is strictly more powerful than any Markov model. More importantly, the non-emitting model outperforms the classic interpolated model on the natural language texts under a wide range of experimental conditions, with only a modest increase in com

We study the chaotic behavior of the ``GOY'' shell model by measuring the variation of the maximal Lyapunov exponent with the parameter $ε$ which determines the nature of the second invariant (the generalized ``helicity'' invariant). After a Hopf bifurcation, we observe a critical point at $ε_c \sim 0.38704$ above which the maximal Lyapunov e

The general solution of the inverse Frobenius-Perron problem considering the construction of a fully chaotic dynamical system with given invariant density is obtained within the class of one-dimensional unimodal maps. Some interesting connections between this solution and the approach via conjugation transformations are eluminated. The developed method is ap

In this paper we investigate mixing and transport in correspondence of a meandering jet. The large-scale flow field is a kinematically assigned streamfunction. Two basic mixing mechanisms are considered, first separately and then combined together: deterministic chaotic advection, induced by a time dependence of the flow, and turbulent diffusion, described b
Paul N. Arendt,
Maxwell's equations and the equations governing charged particle dynamics are presented for a rotating coordinate system with the global time coordinate of an observer on the rotational axis. Special care is taken in defining the relevant entities in these equations. Ambiguities in the definitions of the electromagnetic fields are pointed out, and in fac

We examine the properties of dark matter halos within a rich galaxy cluster using a high resolution simulation that captures the cosmological context of a cold dark matter universe. The mass and force resolution permit the resolution of 150 halos with circular velocities larger than 80 kms within the cluster's virial radius of 2 Mpc. This enables an unpr
