A historical perspective on the study of asymmetries in planetary nebulae (PNs) is presented. We also describe our ongoing work in high resolution spectroscopy of planetaries, and discuss some likely future directions for the study of asymmetrical PNs.

We report results from a program of high-resolution spectral mapping of rotational H_2 emission from bipolar planetary and pre-planetary nebulae. Long-slit spectra obtained with the NOAO Phoenix near-infrared spectrometer allow us to probe the molecular kinematics of these nebulae at moderate spatial resolution. The nature of the dark matter in the haloes of galaxies is one of the outstanding questions in astrophysics. All stellar candidates, until recently thought to be likely baryonic contributions to the Halo of our Galaxy, are shown to be ruled out. Faint stars and brown dwarfs are found to constitute only a few percent of the mass of the Galaxy. Stellar remnant

After studying the orientation of a warp generated by a companion satellite, we show that the Galactic Warp would be oriented in a different way if the Magellanic Clouds were its cause. We have treated the problem analytically, and complemented it with numerical N-Body simulations.

Recent detailed simulations of Galactic Chemical Evolution have shown that the heavy elements, in particular [Fe/H], are expected to exhibit a weak, or absent, correlation with stellar ages in the early Galaxy due to the lack of efficient mixing of interstellar material enriched by individual Type II supernovae. The theory of coronal evaporation predicts the formation of an inner hole in the cool thin accretion disk for mass accretion rates below a certain value (~ 1/50 of the Eddington mass accretion rate) and the sudden disappearance of this hole when the mass accretion rate rises above that value. We analyze the properties of the pulsed emission from the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 in observations of its April 1998 outburst by the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. We present results from photoionization models of low-metallicity HII regions. These nebulae form the basis for measuring the primordial helium abundance. Our models show that the helium ionization correction factor (ICF) can be non-negligible for nebulae excited by stars with effective temperatures larger than 40,000 K. I review the construction of the Exact Parity or Mirror Matter Model and explain how it solves the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems. The oscillation driven relic neutrino asymmetry amplification phenomenon is then used to demonstrate the consistency of the model with Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.

We reconsider theories with low gravitational (or string) scale M_* where Newton's constant is generated via new large-volume spatial dimensions, while Standard Model states are localized to a 3-brane. Utilizing compact hyperbolic manifolds (CHM's) we show that the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes is radically altered. This allows an early univers
Green's Function Monte Carlo study of correlation functions in the (2+1)D U(1) lattice gauge theory
hep-latChris J. Hamer, Robert J. Bursill, Maria Samaras
A ``forward walking'' Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm has been developed to calculate correlation functions for the Hamiltonian lattice formulation of U(1) Yang-Mills theory in (2+1) dimensions. It is shown that Wilson loops can be calculated with high accuracy. Creutz ratios are used to determine the string tension, which agrees with results fro

We present data collected with the HERA-B wire target which prove the existence of coasting beam at the HERA proton storage ring. The coasting beam is inherently produced by the proton machine operation and is not dominated by target effects.

In this talk I discuss the reach of traditional methods of elementary particle physics in five broad experimental areas. For each of these areas I inquire how that reach is, or might be, extended by experimental and observational astrophysics and astronomy. The five areas are: searches for particles with very large masses and measuring those masses, searches

Recent new results on the determination of the rapidity dependence of the differential inclusive jet cross section, $<d^{2}σ/d\et dη>$, as a function of jet $E_{T}$ in \ppbar collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1800$ GeV, measured by the D0 detector at the Tevatron, are presented along with the comparisons to theoretical next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD pred

The problem to estimate the background due to accidental coincidences in the search for coincidences in gravitational wave experiments is discussed. The use of delayed coincidences obtained by orderly shifting the event times of one of the two detectors is shown to be the most correct

What forms will have an equations of modern physics if the dimensions of our time and space are fractional? The generalized equations enumerated by title are presented by help the generalized fractional derivatives of Riemann-Liouville.

We perform a numerical analysis of the gravitational field of a global monopole coupled nonminimally to gravity, and find that, for some given nonminimal couplings (in constrast with the minimal coupling case), there is an attractive region where bound orbits exist. We exhibit the behavior of the frequency shifts that would be associated with `rotation curve
From Massively Parallel Algorithms and Fluctuating Time Horizons to Non-equilibrium Surface Growth

We study the asymptotic scaling properties of a massively parallel algorithm for discrete-event simulations where the discrete events are Poisson arrivals. The evolution of the simulated time horizon is analogous to a non-equilibrium surface. Monte Carlo simulations and a coarse-grained approximation indicate that the macroscopic landscape in the steady stat

We introduce a fractional Kramers equation for a particle interacting with a thermal heat bath and external non-linear force field. For the force free case the velocity damping follows the Mittag-Leffler relaxation and the diffusion is enhanced. The equation obeys the generalized Einstein relation, and its stationary solution is the Boltzmann distribution. O
