In this paper we study various properties of finite stochastic systems or hidden Markov chains as they are alternatively called. We discuss their construction following different approaches and we also derive recursive filtering formulas for the different systems that we consider. The key tool is a simple lemma on conditional expectations.

Among other things, it is shown that there exist Banach spaces $Z$ and $W$ such that $Z^{**}$ and $W$ have bases, and for every $p\in[1,2)$ there is an operator $T:W\to Z$ that is not $p$-nuclear but $T^{**}$ is $p$-nuclear.

The problem of immersing a simply connected surface with a prescribed shape operator is discussed. From classical and more recent work, it is known that, aside from some special degenerate cases, such as when the shape operator can be realized by a surface with one family of principal curves being geodesic, the space of such realizations is a convex set in a

Inflationary theory is already 20 years old, and it is impossible to describe all of its versions and implications in a short talk. I will concentrate on several subjects which I believe to be most important. First of all, I will give a brief review of the first versions of inflationary theory, from Starobinsky model to new inflation. Then I will describe ch

We study static brane configurations in the bulk background of the topological black holes in asymptotically flat spacetime. We find that such configurations are possible even for flat black hole horizon, unlike the AdS black hole case. We construct the brane world model with an orbifold structure S^1/Z_2 in such bulk background. We also study massless bulk

We give a detailed discussion of the disk amplitudes with one closed string insertion, which we used to construct the supergravity couplings of noncommutative D-branes to the RR potentials, given in hep-th/0104139. We prove the inclusion of Elliott's formula, the integer-valued modification of the noncommutative Chern character, to all orders in the gaug

1.An expression for the smoothed counting function in terms of the fractional derivatives of the delta-function is presented. 2. The Neumann-Dirichlet (ND) boundary problem is introduced via some elementary examples based on a functorial relation between the ND, DD, NN and periodic boundary conditions.

The two-component approach to the one-dimensional Dirac equation is applied to the Woods-Saxon potential. The scattering and bound state solutions are derived and the conditions for a transmission resonance (when the transmission coefficient is unity) and supercriticality (when the particle bound state is at E=-m) are then derived. The square potential limit

The high energy thermodynamics of Little String Theory (LST) is known to be unstable. An unresolved question is whether the corresponding instability in LST holographic dual is of stringy or supergravity origin. We study UV thermodynamics of a large metric deformation of the LST dual realized (in the extremal case) by type IIB fivebranes wrapping a two-spher

We consider magnetic catalysis in a field-theoretic system of (3+1)-dimensional Dirac fermions with anisotropic kinetic term. By placing the system in a strong external magnetic field, we examine magnetically-induced fermion mass generation. When the coupling anisotropy is strong, in which case the fermions effectively localize on the plane, we find a signif

We check the $u$ and $d$ quark contributions to the spin content of the $Λ$ by means of the $q\toΛ$ fragmentation and find that the $u$ and $d$ quarks of the $Λ$ are likely positively polarized. The parton distributions in the $Λ$ are given by a successful statistical model which can reproduce and correlate a vast body of polarized and unpolarized structure

In this paper we stress the idea that new, more precise neutrino cross-sections measurements at low energies will be necessary to improve the results of future big neutrino detectors, which will be dominated by the contribution of the systematic errors. The use of a muon beam instead of the traditional pion beams is proposed. This choice allows the simultane

This experiment is unique in that it selects a single parity violating transition amplitude, 3P2-1D2, and consequently directly constrains the

The stable profile of the boundary of a plant's leaf fluctuating in the direction transversal to the leaf's surface is described in the framework of a model called a "surface à godets". It is shown that the information on the profile is encoded in the Jacobian of a conformal mapping (the coefficient of deformation) corresponding to an isometr

The recent identification of the perpendicular mode of radio polarization as the primary one in the Vela pulsar by Lai et al. (2001) is interpreted in terms of the maser mechanism proposed by Luo & Melrose (1995). We suggest that such a mechanism may also be operative for the parallel mode which opens up the possibility of accounting for all types of polariz

Quantum billiards provide an excellent forum for the analysis of quantum chaos. Toward this end, we consider quantum billiards with time-varying surfaces, which provide an important example of quantum chaos that does not require the semiclassical ($\hbar \longrightarrow 0$) or high quantum-number limits. We analyze vibrating quantum billiards using the frame

We study a generalized ladder resummation in the superfluid phase of the nuclear matter. The approach is based on a conserving generalization of the usual T-matrix approximation including also anomalous self-energies and propagators. The approximation here discussed is a generalization of the usual mean-field BCS approach and of the in medium T-matrix approx

After more than a decade of actively accreting at about a tenth of the Eddington critical mass accretion rate, the neutron-star X-ray transient KS 1731-260 returned to quiescence in early 2001. We present a Chandra/ACIS-S observation taken several months after this transition. We detected the source at an unabsorbed flux of ~2 x 10^{-13} erg/cm^2/s (0.5-10 k

The soft X-ray excess emission in the southern cluster Sersic 159-03 represents hiterto the strongest effect of its kind. Emission in the ~0.2-0.4 keV passband is detected far in excess of the expected contribution from the hot phase of the intra-cluster medium, and extends to the X-ray signal limit of the cluster. Our analysis of ROSAT PSPC observations rev

The theory of Vassiliev invariants deals with many modules of diagrams on which the algebra Lambda defined by Pierre Vogel acts. By specifying a quadratic simple Lie superalgebra, one obtains a character on Lambda. We show the coherence of these characters by building a map of graded algebras beetwen Lambda and a quotient of a ring of polynomials in three va

Quintessence has been introduced as an alternative to the cosmological constant scenario to account for the current acceleration of the universe. This new dark energy component allows values of the equation of state parameter $w_{Q}^0\geq-1$, and in principle measurements of cosmological distances to Type Ia supernovae can be used to distinguish between thes

We consider a single-interface model for the description of Barkhausen noise in soft ferromagnetic materials. Previously, the model had been used only in the adiabatic regime of infinitely slow field ramping. We introduce finite driving rates and analyze the scaling of event sizes and durations for different regimes of the driving rate. Coexistence of interm

The vortex states in a thin mesoscopic disk are investigated within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory in the presence of different ''model'' magnetic field profiles with zero average field which may result from a ferromagnetic disk or circulating currents in a loop near the superconductor. We calculated the dependences of both the g

We find a consistency between two different approaches of hard diffraction, namely the QCD dipole model and the Soft Colour Interaction approach. A theoretical interpretation in terms of S-Matrix and perturbative QCD properties in the small $x_{Bj}$ regime is proposed.

Transition probabilities governing the interaction of energy packets and matter are derived that allow Monte Carlo NLTE transfer codes to be constructed without simplifying the treatment of line formation. These probabilities are such that the Monte Carlo calculation asymptotically recovers the local emissivity of a gas in statistical equilibrium. Numerical

We consider two kinds of stochastic volatility models. Both kinds of models contain a stationary volatility process, the density of which, at a fixed instant in time, we aim to estimate. We discuss discrete time models where for instance a log price process is modeled as the product of a volatility process and i.i.d. noise. We also consider samples of certai

We severely criticize the consuetudinary analysis of the afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the conical-ejection fireball scenarios. We argue that, instead, recent observations imply that the long-duration GRBs and their afterglows are produced by highly relativistic jets of cannonballs (CBs) emitted in supernova explosions. The CBs are heated by their

We study localization and chirality properties of eigenvectors of the lattice Dirac operator. In particular we focus on the dependence of our observables on the size of the corresponding eigenvalue, which allows us to study the transition of a near-zero mode into a bulk mode. We analyze ensembles of quenched SU(3) configurations using a Dirac operator which

We present the results of high-resolution AP3M+SPH simulations of merging clusters of galaxies. We find that the compression and shocking of the core gas during a merger can lead to large increases in bolometric X-ray luminosities and emission-weighted temperatures of clusters. Cooling flows are completely disrupted during equal-mass mergers, with the mass d

Sharp breaks have been observed in the afterglow light curves of several GRBs; this is generally explained by the jet model. However, there are still some uncertainties concerning this interpretation due to the unclear hydrodynamics of jet sideways expansion. Here we propose an alternative explanation to these observed breaks. If we assume that the multiwave

We calculate branching ratios for pure penguin decay modes, $B\to ϕK$ decays using perturbative QCD approach. Our results of branching ratios are consistent with the experimental data and larger than those obtained from the naive factorization assumption and the QCD-improved factorization approach. This is due to a dynamical penguin enhancement in perturbati
