We investigate the origin of diffusion in non-chaotic systems. As an example, we consider 1-$d$ map models whose slope is everywhere 1 (therefore the Lyapunov exponent is zero) but with random quenched discontinuities and quasi-periodic forcing. The models are constructed as non-chaotic approximations of chaotic maps showing deterministic diffusion, and repr

Existence of self-similar, superposed pulse-train solutions of the nonlinear, coupled Maxwell-Schrödinger equations, with the frequencies controlled by the oscillator strengths of the transitions, is established. Some of these excitations are specific to the resonant media, with energy levels in the configurations of $Λ$ and $N$ and arise because of the inte

In this paper, we use the methods found in quant-ph/0201095 to create a continuous variable analogue of Shor's quantum factoring algorithm. By this we mean a quantum hidden subgroup algorithm that finds the period P of a function F:R-->R from the reals R to the reals R, where F belongs to a very general class of functions, called the class of admissible

The kth finite subset space of a topological space X is the space exp_k X of non-empty finite subsets of X of size at most k, topologised as a quotient of X^k. The construction is a homotopy functor and may be regarded as a union of configuration spaces of distinct unordered points in X. We calculate the homology of the finite subset spaces of a connected gr

We show that the Fritzsch texture of lepton mass matrices can naturally lead to the bi-large flavor mixing pattern, if three neutrinos have a normal but weak mass hierarchy (typically, $m_1 : m_2 : m_3 \sim 1 : 3 :10$). The effective mass of the tritium beta decay and that of the neutrinoless double beta decay are too small to be observable in this ansatz, b

Hess and Philipp have constructed what, they claim, is a local hidden variables model reproducing the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. In this paper explicit expressions for the conditional probabilities for the outcomes of the measurements at the two detectors are calculated. We investigate effects of nonlocality in time of the interaction of an atom with its surroundings on the spectral line broadening. We show that these effects can be very significant: In some cases nonlocality in time of this interaction can give rise to a spectral line splitting.

We show that for a general system of N s-wave point scatterers, there are always N eigenmodes. These eigenmodes or eigenchannels play the same role as spherical harmonics for a spherically symmetric target--they give a phase shift only. In other words, the T matrix of the system is of rank N and the eigenmodes are eigenvectors corresponding to non-0 eigenval

Stasheff's $A(\infty)$-algebra $(M,\{m_i:\otimes^iM\to M, i=1,2,3,...\})$ in fact is a DG-algebra $(M,m_1,m_2)$ with not necessarily associative product $m_2$ but this nonassociativity is measured by higher homotopies $m_{i>2}$. Nevertheless such structure arises in the strictly associative situation too, namely in the homology algebra $H(C)$ of a DG-alg

Radial abundance gradients are a common feature of spiral galaxies, and in the case of the Galaxy both the magnitude of the gradients and their variations are among the most important constraints of chemical evolution models. Planetary nebulae (PN) are particularly interesting objects to study the gradients and their variations. Owing to their bright emissio

We have analyzed six OB supergiants and one giant covering spectral types from O3 to B1 in the Galactic OB association Cyg OB2 by means of an updated version of FASTWIND (SAntolaya-Rey, Puls, Herrero, 1997, A&A 323, 348) that includes an approximate treatment of metal line blocking and blanketing. This large coverage in spectral type allows us to derive a ne

We report results from nearly simultaneous pentachromatic VLBI observations towa rds a nearby GPS galaxy NGC 1052. The observations at 1.6 and 4.8 GHz with VSOP, and at 2.3, 8.4, and 15.4 GHz wit h VLBA, provide linear resolutions of $\sim 0.1$ pc. Convex spectra of a double-sided jet imply that synchrotron emission is obscured through foreground cold dense

The discovery of a large population of intra-cluster star clusters in the central region of the Hydra I and Centaurus galaxy clusters is presented. Based on deep VLT photometry (V,I), many star clusters have been identified not only around the early-type galaxies, but also in the intra-cluster field, as far as 250 kpc from the galaxy centres. These intra-clu

We present optical spectroscopy and optical and infrared photometry of the counterpart to the transient X-ray source KS 1947+300. The counterpart is shown to be a moderately reddened V=14.2 early-type Be star located in an area of low interstellar absorption slightly above the Galactic plane. Changes in brightness are accompanied by correlated reddening of t

We propose that the energy source of the outburst of V838 Mon and similar objects is an accretion event, i.e., gravitational energy rather than thermonuclear runaway. We show that the merger of two main sequence stars, of masses 1.5 Mo and 0.1-0.5 Mo can account for the luminosity, large radius, and low effective temperture of V838 Mon and similar objects. S

We examine spectral properties of the ionising continua, the Lyman-break, and the Ly-a and HeII 1640 recombination lines in starbursts. The transition from primordial galaxies to currently observed metallicities, is examined. For the average properties of starbursts, the main findings are: 1) The Lyman continuum flux increases with decreasing metallicity. Fo

We present HST observations of previously undetected optical jets in the low-luminosity radio galaxies B2 0755+37 and B2 1553+24. We show that there is accurate spatial coincidence between optical and radio emission, implying that the former is likely to be synchrotron radiation. The physical properties of the jets are similar to those known previously: thei

We review the properties of the 22 millisecond radio pulsars currently known in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, and their implications for the mass and gas content of the cluster. Further details can be found in the publications from this project to date (Camilo et al. 2000; Freire 2000; Freire et al. 2001a,b; Freire et al. 2003). Throughout the review, we

We investigate the triple-alpha process and the Oklo phenomenon to obtain constraints on possible cosmological time variations of fundamental constants. Specifically we study cosmological temporal constraints for the fine structure constant and nucleon and meson masses.

V697 Sco, the remnant of Nova Scorpii 1941 and currently at V ~ 20.0, is found from photometric observations to have the characteristics of an intermediate polar (IP) with an orbital period (Porb) of 4.49 h and a rotation period (Prot) of 3.31 h. It therefore appears to be a member of the rare class of IPs where Prot ~ Porb, which are probably discless syste

The surface flux (and the corresponding observed flux) of a geometrically thick ``funnel'' shaped disk is computed taking into account the radiation impinging on the surface from other parts of the disk. It is found that the ratio of the maximum apparent luminosity to the real luminosity of the disk is only a factor $\approx 5$ even when the opening

We evaluate the effect that radome transparency has on atmospheric opacity measurements performed by the skydip technique. We show that, except at rather high opacities, it is not sufficient to ignore losses in the radome (or "window") during the data analysis and then subtract them off from the derived atmospheric opacity. Perhaps surprisingly, unle

We report the first result of weak gravitational lensing survey on a 2.1 sq deg Rc-band image taken with a wide field camera (Suprime-Cam) on the prime focus of 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. The weak lensing mass reconstruction is applied to the data to search for dark matter halos of cluster scale; M >= 10^14 solar mass. The reconstructed convergence field is div

We construct the parabosonic string formalism based on the paraquantization of both the center of mass variables and the excitation modes of the string. A critical study of the different commutators of the Poincaré algebra based on the redefinition of its generators and the direct treatment using trilinear relations is done.
