Using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), we obtained submillimeter polarization maps of the Bok globules B335, CB230, and CB244 at 850micron. We find strongly aligned polarization vectors in the case of B335 and CB230, indicating a strong coupling of the magnetic field to the dust grains. Based

We present new multi-epoch near-infrared and optical high-angular images of the V773 Tau pre-main sequence triple system, a weak-line T Tauri (WTTS) system in which the presence of an evolved, ``fossil'' protoplanetary disk has been inferred on the basis of a significant infrared excess. The kinetic energy dissipation rate in the turbulent ISM of disk galaxies is a key ingredient in galaxy evolution models since it determines the effectiveness of large-scale star formation (SF) feedback. Using magneto-hydro-dynamic simulations, we find that the ISM dissipates efficiently the turbulent kinetic energy injected by sources of stellar nature. Thu

Fossil turbulence processes are central to turbulence, turbulent mixing, and turbulent diffusion in the ocean and atmosphere, in astrophysics and cosmology, and in most other natural flows. George Gamov suggested in 1954 that galaxies might be fossils of primordial turbulence produced by the Big Bang. John Woods showed that breaking internal waves on horizon

If G is a group, a pseudocharacter f: G-->R is a function which is "almost" a homomorphism. If G admits a nontrivial pseudocharacter f, we define the space of ends of G relative to f and show that if the space of ends is complicated enough, then G contains a nonabelian free group. We investigate measurement of electron transport in quantum dot systems by using single-electron transistor as a noninvasive detector. The Glauber approximation for the treatment of heavy-ion scattering, has already been shown to give reliable predictions for the reaction cross section in the particular case of intermediate energy charge-exchange processes. In the present work, we couple a Glauber-type model to microscopic Random Phase Approximation calculations of the charge-exchange excit
Dilepton decays of nucleon resonances and dilepton production cross sections in proton-proton collisions
nucl-thM. I. Krivoruchenko
Relativistic, kinematically complete phenomenological expressions for the dilepton decay rates of nucleon resonances with arbitrary spin and parity are derived in terms of the magnetic, electric, and Coulomb transition form factors. The dilepton decay rates of the nucleon resonances with masses below 2 GeV are estimated using the extended vector meson domina

We provide systematic analysis of the differential cross section of the proton-$^3{\rm He}$ elastic scattering at $θ_{\rm cm}=180^{\circ}$ and at $T_p<700$ MeV. Three mechanisms are discussed: 2N pair exchange in the triplet and singlet spin states, pion exchange and direct mechanism. It is shown that t Tp>150 MeV tree-body structure, including triplet and s
Non polynomial conservation law densities generated by the symmetry operators in some hydrodynamical models
nlin.SIMaxim V. Pavlov, Ziemowit Popowicz
New extra series of conserved densities for the polytropic gas model and nonlinear elasticity equation are obtained without any references to the recursion operator or to the Lax operator formalism. Our method based on the utilization of the symmetry operators and allows us to obtain the densities of arbitrary homogenuity dimensions. The nonpolynomial densit
Quiescent String Dominance Parameter F and Classification of One-Dimensional Cellular Automata
nlin.CGSunao Sakai, Megumi Kanno, Yukari Saito
The mechanism which discriminates the pattern classes at the same $λ$, is found. It is closely related to the structure of the rule table and expressed by the numbers of the rules which break the strings of the quiescent states. It is shown that for the N-neighbor and K-state cellular automata, the class I, class II, class III and class IV patterns coexist a

Fix an elliptic curve $E/\Q$, and assume the generalized Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-function $ L(E_D, s) $ for every quadratic twist $E_D$ of $E$ by $D\in\Z$. We combine Weil's explicit formula with techniques of Heath-Brown to derive an asymptotic upper bound for the weighted moments of the analytic rank of $E_D$. It follows from this that, for any

Let $k$ be a number field, and let $S$ be a finite set of maximal ideals of the ring of integers of $k$. In his 1962 ICM address, Shafarevich asked if there are only finitely many $k$-isomorphism classes of algebraic curves of a fixed genus $g\ge 1$ with good reduction outside $S$. He verified this for $g=1$ by reducing the problem to Siegel's theorem. P

We show that a honeycomb circle packing in $\R^2$ with a linear gap defect cannot be completely saturated, no matter how narrow the gap is. The result is motivated by an open problem of G. Fejes Tóth, G. Kuperberg, and W. Kuperberg, which asks whether of a honeycomb circle packing with a linear shift defect is completely saturated. We also show that an fcc s

Let $G\subset SO(4)$ denote a finite subgroup containing the Heisenberg group. In these notes we classify all these groups, we find the dimension of the spaces of $G$-invariant polynomials and we give equations for the generators whenever the space has dimension two. Then we complete the study of the corresponding $G$-invariant pencils of surfaces in $\mathb

We prove that for conformal expanding maps the return time does have constant multifractal spectrum. This is the counterpart of the result by Feng and Wu in the symbolic setting.

A new construction, with more visible canonical features, of a qKdV equation in a q-Virasoro context is exhibited.

We prove that action of a semigroup T on compact metric space X by continuous selfmaps is strongly proximal if and only if T action on P(X), the space of probability measures on $X$ with weak topology, is strongly proximal. As a consequence we prove that affine actions on certain compact convex subsets of finite-dimensional vector spaces are strongly proxima

In this paper I give estimates for the minimal crossing number, leading to a short proof that the crossing number is additive for torus links. These estimates are applied to several classes of links. Finally, I prove a part of a conjecture relating the HOMFLY polynomial and the Kauffman polynomial.

In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau man

This report attempts to summarize the most interesting (and hopefully important) results leading up to and including those presented at the recent Symposium sponsored jointly by the Institute of Quantum Science at Nihon University and KEK. My task is to present the arguments on light-mass scalar mesons below 1 GeV from both theory and phenomenological viewpo

The present paper deals with a next-to-leading order analysis of the radiative $B \to K^* γ$ decay. Working in the PQCD approach developed by Szczepaniak {\it et al.}, we compute the correction, coming from a single gluon exchange with the spectator, to the essential form factor. Since the branching ratio gets much above the experimental data, although in ag
