Real complex networks are often characterized by spatial constraints such as the relative position and adjacency of nodes. The present work describes how Voronoi tessellations of the space where the network is embedded provide not only a natural means for relating such networks with metric spaces, but also a natural means for obtaining fractal complex networ

We introduce a family of lattices for which the Hubbard model and its natural extensions can be quasi-exactly solved, i.e. solved for the ground and low energy states. In particular, we show rigorously that the ground state of the Hubbard model with off-site Coulomb repulsions on a decorated Kagomè lattice is an ordered array of local currents. The low energ

The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a magnitude that measures the sensitivity of quantum dynamics to perturbations in the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we consider the effect of cohesion on the stability of a granular heap. We first briefly review literature results on the cohesion force between two rough granular beads and specifically consider the dependence of the adhesion force on the normal load. The surface dynamics and thermodynamics of metal nanowires are investigated in a continuum model. Since dark matter clusters and groups may have substructure, we have examined the sextupole content of Hubble images looking for a curvature signature in background galaxies that would arise from galaxy-galaxy lensing. Early X-ray observations suggested that the intracluster medium cools and condenses at the centers of clusters, leading to a cooling flow of plasma in the cluster core. The increased incidence of emission-line nebulosity, excess blue light, AGN activity, and molecular gas in the cores of clusters with short central cooling times seemed to support this idea.

Ancient origins of a modern anthropic argument against cosmologies involving infinite series of past events are considered. It is shown that this argument - which in modern times has been put forward by distinguished cosmologists like Paul C. W. Davies and Frank J. The most massive galaxies in the present day universe are the giant ellipticals found in the centers of rich clusters. We utilize anthropic reasoning to demonstrate that we are typical observers of our reference class under a self-sampling assumption by investigating the definition of what a civilization is. With reference to the conflict between such reasoning and the observational lack of extra-terrestrial intelligent life, we conclude that a part of our theoretical unders

This is a short note to announce the availability of some movies that may be useful in classroom discussions on the photographic appearance of objects moving at relativistic speeds. The images are based on special relativity with no account taken of (other than to ignore) the effects of doppler shifts, intensity shifts or gravitational effects.

In this paper, we introduce a new, local formulation of the ensemble Kalman Filter approach for atmospheric data assimilation. Our scheme is based on the hypothesis that, when the Earth's surface is divided up into local regions of moderate size, vectors of the forecast uncertainties in such regions tend to lie in a subspace of much lower dimension than

We compare the most used approximations to calculate the contribution from pion re-scattering mechanisms to pion production from proton-proton scattering, near threshold. Our calculation employs a pseudo-vector coupling for the pi NN vertex and realistic amplitudes for the pi N re-scattering and the NN transitions.

The transverse mass spectra and mid-rapidity yields for $Ξ$s and $Ω$s plus their anti-particles are presented. The 10% most central collision yields suggest that the amount of multi-strange particles produced per produced charged hadron increases from SPS to RHIC energies. A hydrodynamically inspired model fit to the spectra, which assumes a thermalized sour

We use symmetry considerations to investigate how damped modes affect pattern selection in multi-frequency forced Faraday waves. We classify and tabulate the most important damped modes and determine how the corresponding resonant triad interactions depend on the forcing parameters. The relative phase of the forcing terms may be used to enhance or suppress t

Burgers equation is one of the simplest nonlinear partial differential equations-it combines the basic processes of diffusion and nonlinear steepening. In some applications it is appropriate for the diffusion coefficient to be a time-dependent function. Using a Wayne's transformation and centre manifold theory, we derive l-mode and 2-mode centre manifold
Gap Probabilities for Double Intervals in Hermitian Random Matrix Ensembles as $τ$-Functions -- Spectrum Singularity case
math-phN. S. Witte
The probability for the exclusion of eigenvalues from an interval $(-x,x)$ symmetrical about the origin for a scaled ensemble of Hermitian random matrices, where the Fredholm kernel is a type of Bessel kernel with parameter $ a $ (a generalisation of the sine kernel in the bulk scaling case), is considered. It is shown that this probability is the square of

We classify a quasiperiodic flow as either algebraic or transcendental. For an algebraic quasiperiodic flow on the n-torus, we prove that an absolute invariant of the smooth conjugacy class of this flow, known as the multiplier group, is a subgroup of the group of units of the ring of integers in a real algebraic number field of degree n over Q. We also prov

Extending results of Schindler [math.LO/0106087] and Hamkins and Welch [math.LO/0212046], we establish in the context of infinite time Turing machines that P is properly contained in NP intersect coNP. Furthermore, NP intersect coNP is exactly the class of hyperarithmetic sets. For the more general classes, we establish that P+ = (NP+ intersect coNP+) = (NP

It is proved that the exchange property, the Bass stable rank and the quasi-Bass property are all preserved under surjective inverse limits. This is then applied to multiplier rings by showing that in many cases can be obtained as inverse limits.

We solve the following counting problem for measure preserving transformations. For $f\in L_+^1(μ)$, is it true that $\ds \sup_n\frac{\bN_n(f)(x)}{n} <\infty,$ where $$\ds\bN_n(f)(x)= # {k: \frac{f(T^k x)}{k}>\frac 1 n}?$$ One of the consequences is the nonvalidity of J. Bourgain's Return Time Theorem for pairs of $(L^1, L^1)$ functions.

The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the resu

We give an elementary construction of polyhedra whose links are connected bipartite graphs, which are not necessarily isomorphic pairwise. We show, that the fundamental groups of some of our polyhedra contain surface groups. In particular, we construct polyhedra whose links are generalized $m$-gons. The polyhedra of this type are interesting because of their

Using intersection theory in the context of Hilbert manifolds and geometric homology we show how to recover the main operations of string topology built by M. Chas and D. Sullivan. We also study and build an action of the homology of reduced Sullivan's chord diagrams on the singular homology of free loop spaces, extending previous results of R. Cohen and

In this note we build on our previous work with Takehiko Yasuda to prove a precise version of inversion of adjunction for varieties which are local complete intersections.
