Family of Nonequilibrium Statistical Operators and the Influence of the Past on the Present
cond-mat.stat-mechV. V. Ryazanov
A family of nonequilibrium statistical operators (NSO) is introduced which differ by the system lifetime distribution over which the quasiequilibrium distribution is averaged. This changes the form of the source in the Liouville equation, as well as the expressions for the kinetic coefficients, average fluxes, and kinetic equations obtained with use of NSO.

We measure the absorption spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We focus on the absorption spectrum into the lowest Landau Level around nu=1. We find that the spectrum consists of bound electron-hole complexes, trion and exciton like. We have developed a method to simulate multiple electron scattering in a vacuum barrier using real-space single-electron wavefunctions of the separate surfaces. The tunnelling current is calculated to first order in the Dyson series. In zero order, we find a result which differs from the usual Bardeen approach by the decay constants of the wavefunctions, ent

We find that the long-wavelength magnetoplasmon, resistively detected by photoconductivity spectroscopy in high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems, deviates from its well-known semiclassical nature as uncovered in conventional absorption experiments. Self-organization of structures and networks from merging and small-scale fluctuations
cond-mat.dis-nnP. Minnhagen, M. Rosvall, K. Sneppen, A. Trusina
We discuss merging-and-creation as a self-organizing process for scale-free topologies in networks. Three power-law classes characterized by the power-law exponents 3/2, 2 and 5/2 are identified and the process is generalized to networks. In the network context the merging can be viewed as a consequence of optimization related to more efficient signaling.

Hysteresis in Ferromagnetic Random Field Ising Model with an Arbitrary Initial State
cond-mat.stat-mechPrabodh Shukla, R Kharwanlang
We present exact expressions for hysteresis loops in the ferromagnetic random field Ising model in the limit of zero temperature and zero driving frequency for an arbitrary initial state of the model on a Bethe lattice. By recasting these walks into the setting of periodic perturbations to an otherwise freely evolving system we introduce the concept of a stroboscopic quantum walk. Through numerical simulation, we establish the link between

We predict the existence of novel first-order phase transitions in a general class of multi-qubit-cavity systems. Apart from atomic systems, the associated super-radiant phase transition should be observable in a variety of solid-state experimental systems, including the technologically important case of interacting quantum dots coupled to an optical cavity

We present some results from simulation of a network of nodes connected by c-NOT gates with nearest neighbors. Though initially we begin with pure states of varying boundary conditions, the updating with time quickly involves a complicated entanglement involving all or most nodes. As a normal c-NOT gate, though unitary for a single pair of nodes, seems to be

As borders between different regions, lines are an important element of natural images. Already at the level of the mammalian primary visual cortex (V1), neurons respond best to lines of a given orientation. We reduce a set of images to linear segments and analyze their statistical properties. In particular, appropriately defined Fourier spectra show more po

We analyze theoretically the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons about a metallic corner with a finite bend radius, using a one-dimensional model analogous to the scattering from a finite-depth potential well. We obtain expressions for the energy reflection and transmission coefficients in the short wavelength limit, as well as an upper bound for the t

We have implemented a three-dimensional finite element approach, based on tricubic polynomials in spherical coordinates, which solves the Schrodinger equation for scattering of a low energy electron from a molecule, approximating the electron exchange as a local potential. The potential is treated as a sum of three terms: electrostatic, exchange and polariza

An improved system for creating a pulsed, low-temperature molecular beam of OH radicals has been developed. We use a pulsed discharge to create OH from H$_2$O seeded in Xe during a supersonic expansion, where the high-voltage pulse duration is significantly shorter than the width of the gas pulse. The pulsed discharge allows for control of the mean speed of

A spaceship with one thruster producing a constant magnitude force is analyzed for various initial conditions. This elementary problem, with one object acted upon by one force, has value as a challenge to one's physical intuition and in demonstrating the benefits and limitations of dimensional analysis. In addition, the problem can serve to introduce a s

A review is given of phase properties in molecular wave functions, composed of a number of (and, at least, two) electronic states that become degenerate at some nearby values of the nuclear configuration. Apart from discussing phases and interference in classical (non-quantal) systems, including light-waves, the review looks at the constructability of comple

We consider fuzzy spacetime, quanta of area and related concepts in the context of latest approaches to Quantum Gravity and show its interface with usual non-Abelian gauge theory. We also discuss in this context a cosmology which correctly predicted a dark energy driven acceleratling universe with a small cosmological constant, amongst other things.
Analytical Solutions for the Nonlinear Longitudinal Drift Compression (Expansion) of Intense Charged Particle Beams
physics.acc-phEdward A. Startsev, Ronald C. Davidson
To achieve high focal spot intensities in heavy ion fusion, the ion beam must be compressed longitudinally by factors of ten to one hundred before it is focused onto the target. The longitudinal compression is achieved by imposing an initial velocity profile tilt on the drifting beam. In this paper, the problem of longitudinal drift compression of intense ch

Differential rotation occurs in conducting flows in accretion disks and planetary cores. In such systems, the magnetorotational instability can arise from coupling Lorentz and centrifugal forces to cause large radial angular momentum fluxes. We present the first experimental observation of the magnetorotational instability. Our system consists of liquid sodi

The Li7 total photoabsorption cross section is calculated microscopically. As nucleon-nucleon interaction the semi-realistic central AV4' potential with S- and P-wave forces is taken. The interaction of the final 7-nucleon system is fully taken into account via the Lorentz Integral Transform (LIT) method. For the calculation of the LIT we use expansions

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) monthly index is studied from 1825 till 2002 in order to identify the scaling ranges of its fluctuations upon different delay times and to find out whether or not it can be regarded as a Markov process. A Hurst rescaled range analysis and a detrended fluctuation analysis both indicate the existence of weakly persistent lo

An N=1 supersymmetric system is constructed and its integrability is shown by obtaining three soliton solutions for it using the supersymmetric version of Hirota's direct method.
Irreducible characters and Clebsch-Gordan series for the exceptional algebra $E_6$: an approach through the quantum Calogero-Sutherland model
math-phJ. Fernandez-Nunez, W. Garcia-Fuertes, A. M. Perelomov
We re-express the quantum Calogero-Sutherland model for the Lie algebra $E_6$ and the particular value of the coupling constant $κ=1$ by using the fundamental irreducible characters of the algebra as dynamical variables. For that, we need to develop a systematic procedure to obtain all the Clebsch-Gordan series required to perform the change of variables. We
Convergence of the empirical process in Mallows distance, with an application to bootstrap performance
math.PRRichard Samworth, Oliver Johnson
We study the rate of convergence of the Mallows distance between the empirical distribution of a sample and the underlying population. The surprising feature of our results is that the convergence rate is slower in the discrete case than in the absolutely continuous setting. We show how the hazard function plays a significant role in these calculations. As a
