For the Toeplitz quantization of complex-valued functions on a $2n$-dimensional torus we prove that the expected number of eigenvalues of small random perturbations of a quantized observable satisfies a natural Weyl law. Observations of hundreds of supersoft x-ray sources (SSSs) in external galaxies have shed light on the diversity of the class and on the natures of the sources. SSSs are linked to the physics of Type Ia supernovae and accretion-induced collapse, ultraluminous x-ray sources and black holes, the ionization of the interstellar medium, and tidal disruption by su

We obtain some nonexistence results for complete noncompact stable hyppersurfaces with nonnegative constant scalar curvature in Euclidean spaces. As a special case we prove that there is no complete noncompact strongly stable hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ with zero scalar curvature $S_2$, nonzero Gauss-Kronecker curvature and finite total curvature (i

Realistic accretion disk models require a number of ingredients, including viscous fluids, electromagnetic fields and general relativistic corrections. Close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) the latter can be appreciable and (quasi-)Newtonian approximations become unreliable. This is particularly true for nearly extremal black holes like GRS 191
Testing Molecular-Cloud Fragmentation Theories: Self-Consistent Analysis of OH Zeeman Observations
astro-ph.GATelemachos Ch. Mouschovias, Konstantinos Tassis
The ambipolar-diffusion theory of star formation predicts the formation of fragments in molecular clouds with mass-to-flux ratios greater than that of the parent-cloud envelope. By contrast, scenarios of turbulence-induced fragmentation do not yield such a robust prediction. Based on this property, Crutcher et al. (2009) proposed an observational test that c
Electronic structure of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet VOCl: a multi-orbital Mott insulator

We have studied the electronic structure of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet VOCl using photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory including local Coulomb repulsion. From calculated exchange integrals and the observed energy dispersions we argue that the degree of one-dimensionality regarding both the magnetic and electronic prope

Using the coherent state techniques developed for the analysis of the EPRL model we give the asymptotic formula for the Ponzano-Regge model amplitude for non-tardis triangulations of handlebodies in the limit of large boundary spins. The formula produces a sum over all possible immersions of the boundary triangulation and its value is given by the cosine of

A generalization of Jacobi's elliptic functions is introduced as inversions of hyperelliptic integrals. We discuss the special properties of these functions, present addition theorems and give a list of indefinite integrals. As a physical application we show that periodic kink solutions (kink chains) of the double sine-Gordon model can be described in a

Performance and reliability of content access in mobile networks is conditioned by the number and location of content replicas deployed at the network nodes. Facility location theory has been the traditional, centralized approach to study content replication: computing the number and placement of replicas in a network can be cast as an uncapacitated facility

The four lectures that I gave in the XIII Ciclo de Cursos Especiais at the National Observatory of Brazil in Rio in October 2008 were (1) a brief history of dark matter and structure formation in a LambdaCDM universe; (2) challenges to LambdaCDM on small scales: satellites, cusps, and disks; (3) data on galaxy evolution and clustering compared with simulatio

Recent models of molecular cloud formation and evolution suggest that such clouds are dynamic and generally exhibit gravitational collapse. We present a simple analytic model of global collapse onto a filament and compare this with our numerical simulations of the flow-driven formation of an isolated molecular cloud to illustrate the supersonic motions and i

Given a brane tiling, that is, a bipartite graph on a torus, we can associate with it a singular 3-Calabi-Yau variety. Using the brane tiling, we can also construct all crepant resolutions of the above variety. We give an explicit toric description of tilting bundles on these crepant resolutions. This result proves the conjecture of Hanany, Herzog and Vegh a
