Numerous algorithms are used for nonnegative matrix factorization under the assumption that the matrix is nearly separable. In this paper, we show how to make these algorithms efficient for data matrices that have many more rows than columns, so-called "tall-and-skinny matrices". We have studied the non-linear conductivity of high-quality CaRuO$_3$ thin films with residual resistivity ratio up to 57 using micro-second short, high-field current pulses at low temperatures. Even for the shortest
Type Ia supernova bolometric light curves and ejected mass estimates from the Nearby Supernova Factory
astro-ph.COR. Scalzo, G. Aldering, P. Antilogus, C. Aragon
We present a sample of normal type Ia supernovae from the Nearby Supernova Factory dataset with spectrophotometry at sufficiently late phases to estimate the ejected mass using the bolometric light curve. We measure $^{56}$Ni masses from the peak bolometric luminosity, then compare the luminosity in the $^{56}$Co-decay tail to the expected rate of radioactiv

A novel PET detector consisting of strips of polymer scintillators is being developed by the J-PET Collaboration. The map of efficiency and the map of geometrical acceptance of the 2-strip J-PET scanner are presented. Map of efficiency was determined using the Monte Carlo simulation software GATE based on GEANT4. Both maps were compared using method based on
Comment on Microscopic magnetic modeling for the S = 1/2 alternating chain compounds Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 (arXiv:1402.1091)
cond-mat.str-elMasatoshi Sato, Yoshiaki Kobayashi
In a recent paper by Schmitt et al. (arXiv:1402.1091), signs of two exchange interactions of one-dimensional alternating chains in distorted honeycomb systems of Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 are argued by theoretical calculations. Although the authors report that they have clarified that the interaction J1a is ferromagnetic between the spins within a structural

We establish the existence of multi-bump solutions for the following class of quasilinear problems $$ - Δ_{ p(x) } u + \big( λV(x) + Z(x) \big) u ^{ p(x)-1 } = f(x,u) \text{ in } \mathbb R^N, \, u \ge 0 \text{ in } \mathbb R^N, $$ where the nonlinearity $ f \colon \mathbb R^N \times \mathbb R \to \mathbb R $ is a continuous function having a subcritical grow
Thermodynamical Phase transitions, the mean-field theories, and the renormalization (semi)group: A pedagogical introduction
cond-mat.stat-mechNavinder Singh Bathinda
While analyzing second order thermodynamical phase transitions, Lev Landau (the famous Russian physicist) introduced a very vital concept, the concept of an "order parameter". This not only amalgamated the previous fragmentary theoretical understanding of phase transitions (an arsenal of mean-field theories) but also it put forward the important theo

This paper analyzes the survivability of a physical network against earthquakes and proposes spatial network design rules to make a network robust against earthquakes. The disaster area model used is fairly generic and bounded. The proposed design rules for physical networks include: (i) a shorter zigzag route can reduce the probability that a network inters
The relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of the formal Hamiltonian vector fields on 6-dimensional plane
math.SGKentaro Mikami
Using Crystal basis theory, we study the relative Gel'fand-Kalinin-Fuks cohomology groups of the formal Hamiltonian vector fields on 6-dimensional plane with weight =2,4,6.
Electrodynamical Forbiddance of Strong Quadrupole Light-Molecule Interaction in the Methane Molecule and its Manifestation in Surface Enhanced Hyper Raman Scattering Spectra
physics.chem-phV. P. Chelibanov, A. M. Polubotko
It is demonstrated in the framework of the Dipole-Quadrupole theory, that strong quadrupole light-molecule interaction, which is responsible for the most enhancement of SEHRS in the methane molecule, which belongs to the symmetry group, experiences so-called electrodynamical forbiddance due to electrodynamical law, and does not influence on the formation of

We generalize the observable diameter and the separation distance for metric measure spaces to those for pyramids, and prove some limit formulas for these invariants for a convergent sequence of pyramids. We obtain various applications of our limit formulas as follows. We have a criterion of the phase transition property for a sequence of metric measure spac
Half-open Penning trap with efficient light collection for precision laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions
physics.atom-phDavid von Lindenfels, Manuel Vogel, Wolfgang Quint, Gerhard Birkl
We have conceived, built and operated a 'half-open' cylindrical Penning trap for the confinement and laser spectroscopy of highly charged ions. This trap allows fluorescence detection employing a solid angle which is about one order of magnitude larger than in conventional cylindrical Penning traps. At the same time, the desired electrostatic and mag
Dependence of the thermoluminescent high-temperature ratio (HTR) of LiF:Mg,Ti detectors on proton energy and dose
physics.ins-detP. Bilski, M. Sadel, J. Swakon, A. Weber
The high-temperature ratio (HTR) is a parameter quantifying changes of the shape of the high-temperature part of the LiF:Mg,Ti glow-curve after exposure to densely ionizing radiation. It was introduced in order to estimate the effective LET of an unknown radiation field and to correct the decreased relative TL efficiency for high Linear Energy Transfer (LET)

Charge ordering (CO) with long-periodicities in a geometrically frustrated system, theta-(BEDT-TTF)2X, is numerically studied. We consider interacting fermion models on the anisotropic triangular lattice: the extended Hubbard model and the spinless fermion model, taking account of the inter-site Coulomb interactions on not only the nearest neighbor (NN) but

Versatile methods for the manipulation of individual quantum systems, such as confined particles, have become central elements in current developments in precision spectroscopy, frequency standards, quantum information processing, quantum simulation, and alike. For atomic and some subatomic particles, both neutral and charged, a precise control of magnetic f

The present work deals with a dynamical systems study of quintessence potentials leading to the present accelerated expansion of the universe. The principal interest is to check for late time attractors which give an accelerated expansion for the universe. Two examples are worked out, namely the exponential and the power-law potentials.
Multiplicity distributions in the forward rapidity region in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider
hep-phPremomoy Ghosh, Sanjib Muhuri
Measured multiplicity distributions of primary charged particles produced in the forward rapidity region of the $proton-proton$ ($pp$) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy, $\sqrt {s}$ = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been analyzed in terms of the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) function. Like the multiplicity distributions in the mid-
Macroscopic and microscopic structures of the family tree for decomposable critical branching processes
math.PRVladimir Vatutin
A decomposable strongly critical Galton-Watson branching process with $N$ types of particles labelled $1,2,...,N$ is considered in which a type~$i$ parent may produce individuals of types $j\geq i$ only. This model may be viewed as a stochastic model for the sizes of a geographically structured population occupying $N$ islands, the location of a particle bei

We introduce a notion of a weak Poisson structure on a manifold $M$ modeled on a locally convex space. This is done by specifying a Poisson bracket on a subalgebra $\cA \subeq C^\infty(M)$ which has to satisfy a non-degeneracy condition (the differentials of elements of $\cA$ separate tangent vectors) and we postulate the existence of smooth Hamiltonian vect

We study the phenomenology of dark matter in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity after the discovery of Higgs boson. We analyze the relic abundance of dark matter, focusing on the effects of coannihilaitons with T-odd fermions. After determining the parameter space that predicts the correct relic abundance measured by WMAP and Planck collaborations, we ev

In this Letter, we experimentally investigate the collapse of initially dry granular media into water and the subsequent impulse waves. We systematically characterize the influence of the slope angle and the granular material on the initial amplitude of the generated leading wave and the evolution of its amplitude during the propagation.
