We present a logic for reasoning about graded inequalities which generalizes the ordinary inequational logic used in universal algebra. The logic deals with atomic predicate formulas of the form of inequalities between terms and formalizes their semantic entailment and provability in graded setting which allows to draw partially true conclusions from partial

We present a systematic study of the structure of crossed products and fixed point algebras by compact group actions with the Rokhlin property on not necessarily unital C*-algebras. Does it Make Sense to Speak of Self-Locating Uncertainty in the Universal Wave Function? Remarks on Sebens and Carroll
gr-qcAdrian Kent
Following a proposal of Vaidman, Sebens and Carroll have argued that in Everettian (i.e. purely unitary) quantum theory, observers are uncertain, before they complete their observation, about which Everettian branch they are on. They argue further that this solves the problem of making sense of probabilities within Everettian quantum theory, even though the

Optical measurements and first-principles calculations of the band structure and exciton states in direct-gap bulk and few-layer PbI2 indicate that the n = 1 exciton is Frenkel-like in nature in that its energy exhibits a weak dependence on thickness down to atomic-length scales. We study an inverse source problem for the acoustic wave equation in a random waveguide. The goal is to estimate the source of waves from measurements of the acoustic pressure at a remote array of sensors. The waveguide effect is due to boundaries that trap the waves and guide them in a preferred (range) direction, the waveguide axis, along which the medium

Weak value amplification: a view from quantum estimation theory that highlights what it is and what isn't
quant-phJuan P. Torres, Luis Jose Salazar-Serrano
Weak value amplification (WVA) is a concept that has been extensively used in a myriad of applications with the aim of rendering measurable tiny changes of a variable of interest. In spite of this, there is still an on-going debate about its true nature and whether is really needed for achieving high sensitivity. Here we aim at solving the puzzle, using some

Conversion of pure spin current to charge current in single-layer graphene (SLG) is investigated by using spin pumping. Large-area SLG grown by chemical vapor deposition is used for the conversion. Efficient spin accumulation in SLG by spin pumping enables observing an electromotive force produced by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) of SLG. The spin Hall

We study the possibility that the universe is subjected to a deformation, besides its expansion described by Friedmann's equations. The concept of smooth deformation of a riemannian manifolds associated with the extrinsic curvature is applied the standard FLRW cosmology. Starting from the resulting modified Friedman's equation we study two possible s

A distributed adaptive algorithm is proposed to solve a node-specific parameter estimation problem where nodes are interested in estimating parameters of local interest, parameters of common interest to a subset of nodes and parameters of global interest to the whole network. To address the different node-specific parameter estimation problems, this novel al

A hyperidentity $E$ can be viewed as a statement in second order logic. When combined with a similarity type $τ$, it can also be considered as a set of first order statements. Based on examples from "A small basis for hyperassociativity", which included hyperassociativity and $τ=<2>$, it was conjectured that each first order theory so produced was fi
Real time cumulant approach for charge transfer satellites in x-ray photoemission spectra

X-ray photoemission spectra generally exhibit satellite features in addition to the quasi-particle peaks due to many-body excitations, which have been of considerable theoretical and experimental interest. However, the satellites attributed to charge-transfer (CT) excitations in correlated materials have proved difficult to calculate from first principles. H

Numerical simulation on nuclear collisions are performed using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory (Cb-TDHFB) in the three-dimensional coordinate space. Comparing results of the Cb-TDHFB and the conventional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations, we study effects of the pairing correlation on fusion reaction of $^{22}$
A penalization method for calculating the flow beneath travelling water waves of large amplitude
physics.flu-dynAdrian Constantin, Konstantinos Kalimeris, Otmar Scherzer
A penalization method for a suitable reformulation of the governing equations as a constrained optimization problem provides accurate numerical simulations for large-amplitude travelling water waves in irrotational flows and in flows with constant vorticity.
Signature of existence of a BEC-type state in a dilute gas above the BEC transition temperature
cond-mat.quant-gasYinbiao Yang, Wen-ge Wang
We study quantum coherence properties of a dilute gas at temperatures above, but not much above the transition temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). In such a gas, a small proportion of the atoms may possess coherence lengths longer than the mean neighboring-atomic distance, implying the existence of quantum coherence more than that expected for t

This paper builds fundamental perfect fields of positive characteristic and shows the structure of perfect fields that a field of positive characteristic is a perfect field if and only if it is an algebraic extension of a fundamental perfect field.

Astrometry, the most ancient branch of astronomy, was facing extinction during much of the 20th century in the competition with astrophysics. The revival of astrometry came with the European astrometry satellite Hipparcos, approved by ESA in 1980 and launched 1989. Photon-counting astrometry was the basic measuring technique in Hipparcos, a technique invente
SWIFT XRT Observations of the Nova-like Cataclysmic Variables MV Lyr, BZ Cam and V592 Cas

We present a total of ~ 45 ksec (3$\times$15 ksec) of SWIFT XRT observations for three non-magnetic nova-like (NL) Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) (MV Lyr, BZ Cam, V592 Cas) in order to study characteristics of Boundary Layers (BL) in CVs. The nonmagnetic NLs are found mostly in a state of high mass accretion rate ($\ge$1$\times$10$^{-9}$ Msun yr$^{-1}$) and som

An \emph{arithmetic read-once formula} (ROF for short) is a formula (i.e. a tree of computation) in which the operations are $\{+,\times\}$ and such that every input variable labels at most one leaf. We give a simple characterization of such formulae. Other than being interesting in its own right, our characterization gives rise to a property testing algorit

It is shown how to write the first order action for gravity in a gauge theoretic formalism where the spin connection and frame field degrees of freedom are assimilated together into a gauge connection. It is then shown how to couple the theory to spin-0, 1/2, 1 and 3/2 fields in a gauge invariant fashion. The results hold in any number of spacetime dimension

Malicious websites are a major cyber attack vector, and effective detection of them is an important cyber defense task. The main defense paradigm in this regard is that the defender uses some kind of machine learning algorithms to train a detection model, which is then used to classify websites in question. Unlike other settings, the following issue is inher

We give a sketch of proof that any two (Lebesgue) measurable subsets of the unit sphere in $R^n$, for $n\ge 3$, with non-empty interiors and of the same measure are equidecomposable using pieces that are measurable.

In this letter, we present an implementation of a neural microcircuit for image processing employing Hebbian-adaptive learning. The neuronal circuit utilizes only excitatory synapses to correlate action potentials, extracting the uncorrelated ones, which contain significant image information. This circuit is capable of approximating Gabor-like image filterin
