Scattering of low-energy electrons and positrons by atomic beryllium: Ramsauer-Townsend effect
physics.atom-phDavid D. Reid, J. M. Wadehra
Total cross sections for the scattering of low-energy electrons and positrons by atomic beryllium in the energy range below the first inelastic thresholds are calculated. A Ramsauer-Townsend minimum is seen in the electron scattering cross sections, while no such effect is found in the case of positron scattering. A minimum total cross section of 0.016 a.u.

Quantum walks are expected to serve important modelling and algorithmic applications in many areas of science and mathematics. Although quantum walks have been successfully implemented physically in recent times, no major efforts have been made to combat the error associated with these physical implementations in a fault-tolerant manner. In this paper, we pr

The effects of Horava-Lifshitz corrections to the gravito-magnetic field are analyzed. Solutions in the weak field, slow motion limit, referring to the motion of a satellite around the Earth are considered. The post-newtonian paradigm is used to evaluate constraints on the Horava-Lifshitz parameter space from current satellite and terrestrial experiments dat

We report a corrected crystal structure for the CePt2In7 superconductor, refined from single crystal x-ray diffraction data. The corrected crystal structure shows a different Pt-In stacking along the c-direction in this layered material than was previously reported. In addition, all the atomic sites are fully occupied with no evidence of atom site mixing, re

Let $p$ be a prime number, $C$ be any absolutely irreducible affine plane curve over $\mathbb{F}_p$, and $g,f\in\mathbb{F}_p(x,y)$ be rational functions. We continue the study of the distribution of the values of short hybrid exponential sums of the form $S_{H}(x;C) = \sum_{P\in C, x<x(P)\leq x+H}χ(g(P))ψ(f(P))$ on $x\in\mathcal{I}$ for some short interval $
Supercooling and freezing processes in nanoconfined water by time-resolved optical Kerr effect spectroscopy

Using heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect (HD-OKE) measurements, we investigate the vibrational dynamics and the structural relaxation of water nanoconfined in Vycor porous silica samples (pore size $\simeq~4~nm$ ) at different levels of hydration and temperatures. At low level of hydration, corresponding to two complete superficial water layers, no free

We define a general notion of set of indices which, using concepts from pre-ordered sets theory, permits to unify the presentation of several Colombeau-type algebras of nonlinear generalized functions. In every set of indices it is possible to generalize Landau's notion of big-O such that its usual properties continue to hold. Using this generalized noti

The novel $Sr_5Pb_3ZnO_{12}$ oxide was synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure was studied by means of the powder x-ray diffraction Rietveld method and was found to be similar to 3 other previously known $Sr_5Pb_3MO_{12}$ compounds (M = Co, Ni, Cu). Crystals of several hundred microns in size of the new phase were grown in molte

This is the text of my habilitation thesis defended at the École Normale Supérieure. The topological string presents an arena in which many features of string theory proper, such as the interplay between worldsheet and target space descriptions or open-closed duality, can be distilled into computational techniques which yield results beyond perturbation theo

A primary computational problem in kernel regression is solution of a dense linear system with the $N\times N$ kernel matrix. Because a direct solution has an O($N^3$) cost, iterative Krylov methods are often used with fast matrix-vector products. For poorly conditioned problems, convergence of the iteration is slow and preconditioning becomes necessary. We
Investigating the origin of the nonradiative decay of bound excitons in GaN nanowires

We investigate the origin of the fast recombination dynamics of bound and free excitons in GaN nanowire ensembles by temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy using both continuous-wave and pulsed excitation. The exciton recombination in the present GaN nanowires is dominated by a nonradiative channel between 10 and 300 K. Furthermore, bound and f

We consider static spherically symmetric solutions in the scalar-tensor theory of gravity with a scalar field possessing the nonminimal kinetic coupling to the curvature. The lagrangian of the theory contains the term $(\varepsilon g^{μν}+ηG^{μν})ϕ_{,μ}ϕ_{,ν}$ and represents a particular case of the general Horndeski lagrangian, which leads to second-order e

Measurements of electroweak boson production provide an important test of the Standard Model at the LHC energies and allow the partonic content of the proton to be constrained. $W$ and $Z$ bosons are reconstructed in several leptonic final states using data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to about 1 $fb^{-1}$. Inclusive and associated

We derive generic upper bounds on the rate of purity change and entropy increase for open quantum systems. These bounds depend solely on the generators of the nonunitary dynamics and are independent of the particular states of the systems. They are thus perfectly suited to investigate dephasing and thermalization processes of arbitrary systems. We apply thes

We study theoretically fast transfer of excitons between pairs of coupled quantum dots driven by the optical Stark effect that is produced by a short nonresonant laser pulse. The Schrödinger equation, in which the relative position of energy levels of quantum dot subsystems is time-dependent, is solved numerically. Computer simulation shows a way to achieve

In this paper, we present a reduced basis method for pricing European and American options based on the Black-Scholes and Heston model. To tackle each model numerically, we formulate the problem in terms of a time dependent variational equality or inequality. We apply a suitable reduced basis approach for both types of options. The characteristic ingredients
Extended scheme for the projection of material tensors of arbitrary symmetry onto a higher symmetry tensor
cond-mat.mtrl-sciMiguel A. Caro
I propose a straightforward generalization of the projection scheme for elastic tensors introduced by Moakher and Norris [J. Elasticity 85, 215 (2006)] that takes into account also rotations. The "closest" tensor of any desired symmetry to the original tensor of lower symmetry is "closer" in this generalized scheme. The method has an importan

The next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELT), with diameters up to 39 meters, will start opera- tion in the next decade and promises new challenges in the development of instruments. The growing field of astrophotonics (the use of photonic technologies in astronomy) can partly solve this problem by allowing mass production of fully integrated and
Half metallic ferromagnetism in tri-layered perovskites Sr$_4$T$_{3}$O$_{10}$ (T=Co, Rh)

First-principles density functional theory (DFT) is used to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of Sr$_4$Rh$_3$O$_{10}$, a member of the Ruddlesden-Popper series. Based on the DFT calculations taking into account the co-operative effect of Coulomb interaction ($U$) and spin-orbit couplings (SOC), Sr$_4$Rh$_3$O$_{10}$ is found to be a half meta
