Much curent theoretical analysis is based on the hypothesis that the physics beyond the Standard Model is a consequence of new principles that occur at the Planck scale. The question arises whether such principles can ever be directly tested. We show here that for a significant class of models, hypotheses made at the string or Planck scale can indeed be dire

Effective Lagrangians were originally used only at the tree level as so-called phenomenological Lagrangians since they were in general non-renormalizable. Today they are treated as effective field theories valid below a characteristic energy scale. Quantum corrections can then be calculated in a consistent way as for any renormalizable theory. A few applicat

Reassigning degrees of freedom in the standard model allows an interpretation where the SU(2) gauge group is vector-like and parity violation moves to the strong and electromagnetic interactions. In this picture, the electron is paired with an anti-quark. Requiring exact gauge invariance for the electromagnetic interaction clarifies the mechanism behind a re

As a first step towards a nonperturbative investigation of the gauge-fixing (Rome) approach to lattice chiral gauge theories we study a U(1) model with an action that includes a local gauge-fixing term and a mass counterterm for the gauge fields. Cosmological sector for localized mass and spin in 2+1 dimensional topologically massive gravity

The cosmological sector to the full non-linear topologically massive gravity (TMG) is obtained for localized sources of mass $m$ and spin $σ$ besides the asymptotically spinning conical flat sector previously obtained. Inclusion of contact interactions that depend on energy as well as momentum allows the effective range to be fitted to experiment with any desired sign or magnitude. However, power counting breaks down:

The complete one-loop self energies (real and imaginary parts) for photons, gluons, electrons and quarks at finite temperature are calculated numerically and compared to the results of the hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation used for the resummation technique of Braaten and Pisarski. In this way some light is shed on the validity of the weak coupling limit

I review my recent work with Brian Greene and Thomas Roos. First I discuss the effect of a negative cross-coupling on the inflaton decay in two scalar field theories. Our main finding is a new effect, the negative coupling instability, which leads to explosive particle production and very fast inflaton decay. Then I discuss the consequences of this instabili

A basic arbitrariness in the determination of the topology of a manifold at the Planck length is discussed. An explicit example is given of a `smooth' change in topology from the 2-sphere to the 2-torus through a sequence of noncommuting geometries. Applications are considered to the theory of D-branes within the context of the proposed $M$(atrix) theory

We draw connections between the field of contact topology and the study of Beltrami fields in hydrodynamics on Riemannian manifolds in dimension three. We demonstrate an equivalence between Reeb fields (vector fields which preserve a transverse nowhere-integrable plane field) up to scaling and rotational Beltrami fields on three-manifolds. Thus, we character

We review several statistical complexity measures proposed over the last decade and a half as general indicators of structure or correlation. Recently, Lopez-Ruiz, Mancini, and Calbet [Phys. Lett. A 209 (1995) 321] introduced another measure of statistical complexity C_{LMC} that, like others, satisfies the ``boundary conditions'' of vanishing in the
Revisiting two holes in a locally antiferromagnetic background: the role of retardation and Coulomb repulsion effects

The problem of two holes in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations is revisited using computational techniques. Two-dimensional clusters and 2-leg ladders with up to 32 sites are studied with the Lanczos and Truncated Lanczos algorithms. The main motivation is the recently discussed spatial distribution of holes in ladders where the maximum pr

A random lattice model with dilute interlayer bonds of density $p$ is proposed to describe the underdoped high--$T_c$ cuprates. We show analytically via an appropriate perturbation expansion and verify independently by numerical scaling of the conductance that for any finite $p$ the states remain extended in all directions, despite the presence of interlayer
