We present multi-wavelength imaging observations of three nearby and famous active galaxies obtained with NICMOS, ISOCAM and the MPE near-IR integral field spectrometer. The data reveal a variety of features and properties that are missed in optical studies and in traditional IR monodimensional spectroscopy.

We present observations of the 5$_{1,5}\to4_{2,2}$ transition of water vapor at 325.15 GHz taken with the CSO telescope towards Orion IRc2. The emission is more extended than that of other molecular species such as CH$_3$OH. However, it is much less extended than the emission of water vapor at 183.31 GHz reported by Cernicharo et al (1994). A comparison of t

We suggest the radii and luminosities of the X-ray emitting halos of elliptical galaxies define a fundamental plane with the star velocity dispersions, as for the corresponding optical observables. Since the X-ray emitting material usually is at larger radius than the stars this can be interpreted as additional evidence for a relation between the space distr

We present a version of the Fourier Bessel method first introduced by Fisher et al (1994) and Zaroubi et al (1994) with two extensions: (a) we amend the formalism to allow a generic galaxy weight which can be constant rather than the more conventional overweighting of galaxies at high distances, and (b) we correct for the masked zones by extrapolation of Fou

The flux of cosmic ray antiprotons from neutralino annihilations in the galactic halo is computed for a large sample of models in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We also revisit the problem of estimating the background of low-energy cosmic ray induced secondary antiprotons, taking into account their subsequent interactions (and en

Neutrino telescopes of kilometer size are currently being planned. They will be two or three orders of magnitude larger than presently operating detectors, but they will have a much higher muon energy threshold. We discuss the trade-off between area and energy threshold for indirect detection of neutralino dark matter captured in the Sun and in the Earth and

We discuss the first results from two successful simulations of galaxy formation within a cosmological volume. With over 2000 large objects forming in each we have sufficient numbers to reliably produce both galaxy correlation and luminosity functions. We find that the observed galaxy counts are well fitted by these models and that the galaxies display an al

Since January 1997, we have monitored 15 GRB fields, detecting 6 optical/IR afterglows. For GRB 970508, we derive a power-law decay exponent alpha = -1.19 (R-band). The luminosity of the host galaxy L relative to the characteristic luminosity L^{star} is in the range 0.06--0.15, i.e. a dwarf galaxy. For GRB 980326, we derive a power-law decay exponent alpha

A new set of stellar models in the mass range 1.2 to 9 $M_{\odot}$ is presented. The adopted chemical compositions cover the typical galactic values, namely $0.0001 \le Z \le 0.02$ and $0.23 \le Y \le 0.28$. A comparison among the most recent compilations of similar stellar models is also discussed. The main conclusion is that the differencies among the vari

If one wants to represent the galaxy number density at some point in terms of only the mass density at the same point, there appears the stochasticity in such a relation, which is referred to as ``stochastic bias''. The stochasticity is there because the galaxy number density is not merely a local function of a mass density field, but it is a nonloca

Neutron stars inspiralling into a stellar envelope can accrete at rates vastly exceeding the Eddington limit if the flow develops pressures high enough to allow neutrinos to radiate the released gravitational energy. It has been suggested that this hypercritical mode of accretion leads inevitably to the formation of stellar mass black holes during common env

In radio galaxies such as M84 dust features tend to be nearly perpendicular to radio jets yet are not aligned with the galaxy isophotes. The timescale for precession in the galaxy is short suggesting that an alternative mechanism causes the gas disk to be misaligned with the galaxy. In M84 we estimate the pressure on the disk required to overcome the torque

During microlensing events with a small impact parameter, the amplification of the source flux is sensitive to the surface brightness distribution of the source star. Such events provide a means for studying the surface structure of target stars in the ongoing microlensing surveys, most efficiently for giants in the Galactic bulge. In this work we demonstrat

We study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model using the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG).For the cases of on-site interactions and additional nearest-neighbor interactions the phase boundaries of the Mott-insulators and charge density wave phases are determined. We find a direct phase transition between the charge density wave phase and the supe

We consider quantum computing with pseudo-pure states. This framework arises in certain implementations of quantum computing using NMR. We analyze quantum computational protocols which aim to solve exponential classical problems with polynomial resources and ask whether or not entanglement of the pseudo-pure states is needed to achieve this aim. We apply a statistical method to derive very precise locations for soft gamma repeaters using data from the interplanetary network. We demonstrate the validity of the method by deriving a 600 arcsec^2 error ellipse for SGR1900+14 whose center agrees well with the VLA source position. Starting from classical transport theory, we derive a set of covariant equations describing the dynamics of mean fields and their statistical fluctuations in a non-Abelian plasma in or out of equilibrium. A general procedure is detailed for integrating-out the fluctuations as to obtain the effective transport equations for the mean fields. In this manner, co

We present an update of the most stringent experimental bounds on the trilinear R-parity violating couplings. We then analyse bounds on the R-parity violating couplings at the unification scale by renormalising the weak scale bounds. We derive unification scale upper bounds upon the couplings which are broadly independent of the fermion mass texture assumed.

By analyzing a gedanken experiment designed to measure the distance $l$ between two spatially separated points, we find that this distance cannot be measured with uncertainty less than $(ll_P^2)^{1/3}$, considerably larger than the Planck scale $l_P$ (or the string scale in string theories), the conventional wisdom uncertainty in distance measurements. An effective residual interaction for a meson-meson system is computed in lattice QCD. We describe the theoretical framework and present its application to the I=2 channel S-wave interaction of the pi pi system. Scattering phase shifts are also computed and compared to experimental results.

  22. P. Baseilhac, V. A. Fateev

We calculate the vacuum expectation values of local fields for the two-parameter family of integrable field theories introduced and studied by Fateev. Using this result we propose an explicit expression for the vacuum expectation values of local operators in parafermionic sine-Gordon models and in integrable perturbed SU(2) coset conformal field theories.

We show that the angular distributions of leptons or jets due to ttbar spin correlations allow a determination of the top chromomagnetic moment kappa with an accuracy of order 0.1. Traditionally causes come before effects, but according to modern physics things aren't that simple. Special relativity shows that `before' and `after' are relative, and quantum measurement is even more subtle. The pahse transition from instanton-dominated quantum tunneling regime to sphaleron-dominated classical crossover regime is explored in (1+1)-dimensional scalar field theory when spatial coordinate is compactified. In the internal shock scenario for GRBs we expect some fraction of the energy of the burst to be carried by slow moving shells that were ejected at late times. These slow shells collide with faster moving outer shells when the outer shells have slowed down as a result of sweeping up material from the ISM. This gives rise to a forward shock that moves into th

An article by Covello, Gargano and Itaco [Phys.Rev. It is shown that observable effects discussed by these authors do not fully justify their rather strong conclusions.

The following version of a conjecture of Fischer-Colbrie and Schoen is proved: If M is a complete Riemannian 3-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature which contains a two-sided torus S which is of least area in its isotopy class then M is flat. We study a one-dimensional electron liquid coupled by a weak spin-exchange interaction to an antiferromagnetic spin-S ladder with n legs. A perturbative renormalization group analysis in the semiclassical limit reveals the opening of a spin gap, driven by the local magnetic correlations on the ladder. The effect, which we argue is present for any gapful ladd

A three-dimensional layered Ising-Antiferromagnet with a ferromagnetic intra-layer coupling to z neighbors, zJ > 0, and an antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling to z' neighbors, z'J' < 0, is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations on a hexagonal lattice. The physical nature of the anomalous temperature bahavior of the sublattice magnetizations, w

We have probed the effects of atomic-scale impurities on superconductivity in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8} by performing low-temperature tunneling spectroscopy measurements with a scanning tunneling microscope. Our results show that non-magnetic defect structures at the surface create localized low-energy excitations in their immediate vicinity. The impurity-in

The dynamics of a spheroidal vesicle, bounded by an inextensible membrane, is analyzed in function of the enclosed fluid viscosity, and of the membrane mechanical properties. The two situations in which a bending rigidity and a shear elasticity are the potential energy source in the membrane have been compared, and the stability properties of quasi-spherical

Some general features of cosmic ray acceleration are summarized along with some inferences that can be drawn concerning the origin of the UHE component. The UHE luminosity density is found to be similar to that derived for GeV cosmic rays and its slope suggests a distinct origin. Reports of clustering on small angular scale, if confirmed, would rule out most

Beyond all reasonable doubt, black holes are commonly found in the nuclei of most normal galaxies. In recent years, dynamical measurements of hole masses have transformed the study of their functioning and evolution. In particular, relating their masses, as measured contemporaneously, to the properties of distant quasars can constrain models of the combined

We report 102 new redshifts and magnitudes for a sample of galaxies to RF ~ 15.5 mag in a 2.17 deg x 2.17 deg region centered on the galaxy IC 4296, the most luminous member of the A3565 cluster. Up to the limiting magnitude we find 29 cluster members, and measure a velocity dispersion of 228 km/s. The estimated total mass for this system is ~ 3.0 x h**-1 10

To date, the most detailed studies of galactic winds have come from 3-D spectrophotometric observations with radio and Fabry-Perot interferometers. Here, we report the latest results from a long-term optical survey of nearby active and starburst galaxies with the Hawaii Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer (HIFI) at Mauna Kea and the TAURUS-2 system in Austral

The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can be directly determined by measuring three of its properties, its radial-velocity field, its mean proper motion, and the position angle ϕ_ph of its photometric line of nodes. Statistical errors of 2% are feasible based on proper motions obtained with any of several proposed astrometry satellites, the first

We have obtained deep surface photometry of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4244. Our data reliably reach 27.5 R magnitude arcsec^{-2}, a significant improvement on our earlier deep CCD surface photometry of other galaxies. NGC 4244 is a nearby Scd galaxy whose total luminosity is approximately one magnitude fainter than the peak of the Sc luminosity function.

When λ_{T} << d_{T}, where λ_{T} is the de Broglie wavelength and d_{T}, the distance of closest approach of thermal electrons, a classical analysis of the energy of a plasma can be made. In all the classical analysis made until now, it was assumed that the frequency of the fluctuations ω<< T (k_{B}=\hbar=1). Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we eva

This short paper is to be published as part of the centennial celebrations of the American Astronomical Society. It presents some historical background on, and discusses the importance of, the 1953 paper by H.L. Johnson and W.W. Morgan, in which these authors introduced the UBV photometric system and the MK system of spectroscopic classification.

We present a Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 narrow-band H-alpha image of a region on the northeastern limb of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. This location provides a detailed example of where the primary blast wave first encounters the surrounding interstellar medium. The filament structure is seen in exquisite detail in this image, which was obtained prim
