An example of the holographic correspondence between 2d, N=2 quantum field theories and classical 4d, N=2 supergravity theories is found. The constraints on the target space geometry of the 4d, N=2 non-linear sigma-models in N=2 supergravity background are interpreted as the renormalization flow equations in two dimensions. The light-cone Fock-state representation of QCD encodes the properties of a hadrons in terms of frame-independent wavefunctions, providing a systematic framework for evaluating structure functions, exclusive hadronic matrix elements, including time-like heavy hadron decay amplitudes, form factors, and deeply virtual Compton scattering. A fundamental question in QCD is the non-perturbative structure of hadrons at the amplitude level--not just the single-particle flavor, momentum, and helicity distributions of the quark constituents, but also the multi-quark, gluonic, and hidden-color correlations intrinsic to hadronic and nuclear wavefunctions. The light-cone Fock-state representation of QC

We discuss the CP-violating dimuon charge asymmetry of events p p-bar ---> B B-bar X ---> mu mu X in the Standard Model. Our conclusion is that the asymmetry is larger than previously expected and may reach a few percent for the (B_d^0, B-bar_d^0) system. The analysis is also extended to the Two Higgs Doublet Model (Model II).

What the Infrared Behavior of QCD Green Functions can tell us about Confinement in the Covariant Gauge
hep-phLorenz von Smekal, Reinhard Alkofer
We review aspects of confinement in the covariant and local description of QCD and discuss to what extend our present knowledge of the infrared behavior of QCD Green functions can support this description. In particular, we emphasize: the positivity violations of transverse gluon and quark states, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, and the conditions nece

We describe a simple procedure for reducing ADC common noise in modular detectors that does not require additional hardware. A method using detector noise groups should work well for modular particle detectors such as segmented electromagnetic calorimeters, plastic scintillator hodoscopes, cathode strip wire chambers, segmented active targets, and the like.

Fermi co-ordinates are proper co-ordinates of a local observer determined by his trajectory in space-time. Two observers at different positions belong to different Fermi frames even if there is no relative motion between them. Use of Fermi co-ordinates leads to several physical conclusions related to relativistic effects seen by observers in arbitrary motion

We consider the modification of a single particle Schrödinger equation by the inclusion of an additional gravitational self-potential term which follows from the prescription that the' mass-density'that enters this term is given by $m |ψ(\vec {r},t)|^2$, where $ψ(\vec {r}, t)$ is the wavefunction and $m$ is the mass of the particle. This leads to a n

Why is ``worthless'' fiat money generally accepted as payment for goods and services? In equilibrium theory, the value of money is generally not determined: the number of equations is one less than the number of unknowns, so only relative prices are determined. In the language of mathematics, the equations are ``homogeneous of order one''. Us

The melting parameter $Γ_m$ of a classical one-component plasma is estimated using a relation between melting temperature, density, shear modulus, and crystal coordination number that follows from our model of dislocation-mediated melting. In this paper we introduce a new method for finding Galois groups by computer. This is particularly effective in the case of Galois groups of p-extensions ramified at finitely many primes but unramified at the primes above p. Such Galois groups have been regarded as amongst the most mysterious objects in number theory. Very little has hitherto been discovere

The Quillen-Bismut-Freed construction associates a determinant line bundle with connection to an infinite dimensional super vector bundle with a family of Dirac-type operators. We define the regularized first Chern form of the infinite dimensional bundle, and relate it to the curvature of the Bismut-Freed connection on the determinant bundle. In finite dimen

This paper has a two-fold purpose. First, by considering a reformulation of a deep theorem of Göllnitz, we obtain a new weighted partition identity involving the Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, namely, partitions into parts differing by at least two. Consequences of this include Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity for theta functions, Sylvester'

Motivated by deformation quantization, we consider in this paper $^*$-algebras $\mathcal A$ over rings $\ring C = \ring{R}(i)$, where $\ring R$ is an ordered ring and $i^2 = -1$, and study the deformation theory of projective modules over these algebras carrying the additional structure of a (positive) $\mathcal A$-valued inner product. For $A=C^\infty(M)$,

Hirzebruch surfaces provide an excellent example to underline the fact that in general symplectic manifolds, Gromov-Witten invariants might well count curves in the boundary components of the moduli space. We use this example to explain in detail that the counting argument given by Batyrev in "Quantum cohomology rings of toric manifolds" (Asterisque

Let X be a simply connected space and k a commutative ring. Goodwillie, Burghelea and Fiedorowiscz proved that the Hochschild cohomology of the singular chains on the pointed loop space HH^{*}S_*(ΩX) is isomorphic to the free loop space cohomology H^{*}(X^{S^{1}}). We proved that this isomorphism is compatible with both the cup product on HH^{*}S_*(ΩX) and o

A simplicial complex is a set equipped with a down-closed family of distinguished finite subsets. This structure, usually viewed as codifying a triangulated space, is used here directly, to describe "spaces" whose geometric realisation can be misleading. An intrinsic homotopy theory, not based on such realisation but agreeing with it, is introduced.

In this article, we give a rough, and so not complete yet, proof of Kashaev's conjecture, that is, the volume conjecture for hyperbolic knots, where the hyperbolicity equations associated to knot diagrams appear as the stationary phase equations for Kashaev's invariants.

We formulate the modularity conjecture for rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over the field Q of rational numbers. We establish the modularity for the rigid Calabi-Yau threefold arising from the root lattice A_3. Our proof is based on geometric analysis.

We explain how the Harish-Chandra Plancherel Theorem and results in relative Lie algebra cohomology can be used in order to compute in a uniform way the $L^2$-Betti numbers, the Novikov-Shubin invariants, and the $L^2$-torsion of compact locally symmetric spaces thus completing results previously obtained by Borel, Lott, Mathai, Hess and Schick. It turns out

We give skein theoretic formulas for minimal idempotents in the Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras. These formulas are then applied to derive various known results needed in the construction of quantum invariants and modular categories. In particular, an elementary proof of the Wenzl formula for quantum dimensions is given. This proof does not use the representa

The bootstrap for Liouville theory with conformally invariant boundary conditions will be discussed. After reviewing some results on one- and boundary two-point functions we discuss some analogue of the Cardy condition linking these data. This allows to determine the spectrum of the theory on the strip, and illustrates in what respects the bootstrap for nonc

The representation theory of the Virasoro algebra in the case of a logarithmic conformal field theory is considered. Here, indecomposable representations have to be taken into account, which has many interesting consequences. We study the generalization of null vectors towards the case of indecomposable representation modules and, in particular, how such log

The shape function describes (non-perturbative) Fermi motion effects in semi-inclusive heavy flavour decay. Its renormalization properties are substantially dependent on the kind of ultraviolet regulator used. For example, the double logarithm that appears at one loop is larger by a factor 2 in dimensional regularization than in lattice regularization. We sh

This talk summarizes a method for analyzing the properties of any new scalar particle, which is systematic in the sense that it minimizes apriori theoretical assumptions about the properties of the scalar particle, leading to very model-independent results. This kind of analysis lends itself to systematic survey through the terrain of candidate theories, whi

In the MSSM, the CP parities of the neutral Higgs bosons may be mixed by radiative effects induced by explicit CP violation in the third generation of squarks. To allow for this possibility, we argue that the charged Higgs-boson mass and tan(beta) should be used to parametrize the MSSM Higgs sector. We introduce a new benchmark scenario of maximal CP violati
Effects of the Scale-dependent Vacuum Expectation Values in the Renormalization Group Analysis of Neutrino Masses

The contribution of scale-dependent vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of Higgs scalars, which gives significant effects in the evolution of fundamental fermion masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), is now considered in the derivation of the one-loop analytic expression for the evolution of the left-handed Majorana neutrino masses with en
