The purpose of this paper is to extend the Green-Naghdi-Rivlin balance of energy method to continua with microstructure. The key idea is to replace the group of Galilean transformations with the group of diffeomorphisms of the ambient space. A key advantage is that one obtains in a natural way all the needed balance laws on both the macro and micro levels al

In this paper we consider the existence of complete intersection points of type $(a,b,c)$, on the generic degree $d$ surface of $\PP^3$. For any choice of $a, b, c$ we resolve the existence question asymptotically, i.e. for all $d \gg 0$. For small values of $a, b, c$ we resolve the existence problem completely.

We study the conductance through Aharonov-Bohm finite ladder rings with strongly interacting electrons, modelled by the prototypical t-J model. Early-type dwarf galaxies are the most common type of galaxies observed in the Universe. The origin of this kind of systems is still not well understood. cond-mat.stat-mechN. K. Kuzmenko, V. M. Mikhajlov
The heat capacity (C) of a mesoscopic nonsuperconducting fermion system treated as a canonical ensemble of independent particles is studied in a wide range of particle numbers and temperatures which vary from values close to zero up to the Fermi energy. The temperature evolution of C is naturally divided into four stages. On the first one the heat capacity e

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration λ_{ab} in the optimally doped cuprate superconductor (BiPb)_2(SrLa)_2CuO_6+δ(OP Bi2201) by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR). We show that in unconventional $d-$wave superconductors (like OP Bi2201), \muSR experiments conducted in various magnetic fields allow to evaluate the zero-field magneti

A binary renewal process is a stochastic process $\{X_n\}$ taking values in $\{0,1\}$ where the lengths of the runs of 1's between successive zeros are independent. After observing ${X_0,X_1,...,X_n}$ one would like to predict the future behavior, and the problem of universal estimators is to do so without any prior knowledge of the distribution. We prov

"Streamers, sprites, leaders, lightning: from micro- to macroscales" was the theme of a workshop in October 2007 in Leiden, The Netherlands; it brought researchers from plasma physics, electrical engineering and industry, geophysics and space physics, computational science and nonlinear dynamics together around the common topic of generation, structu

The layout of a new instrument designed to study the interaction of highly charged ions with surfaces, which consists of an ion source, a beamline including charge separation and a target chamber, is presented here. By varying the charge state and impact velocity of the projectiles separately, the dissipation of potential and kinetic energy at or below the s

We compute the fluctuations of the magnetization and of the multi-overlaps for the dilute mean field ferromagnet, in the high temperature region. The rescaled magnetization tends to a centered Gaussian variable with variance diverging at the critical line. The rescaled multi-overlaps also tend to centered independent Gaussian variables, but their covariance

Truncated Fourier, Gauss, Kummer and exponential sums can be used to factorize numbers: for a factor these sums equal unity in absolute value, whereas they nearly vanish for any other number. We show how this factorization algorithm can emerge from superpositions of classical light waves and we present a number of simple implementations in optics.

In Mod. Phys. Lett. A 9, 3119 (1994), one of us (R.D.S) investigated a formulation of quantum mechanics as a generalized measure theory. Quantum mechanics computes probabilities from the absolute squares of complex amplitudes, and the resulting interference violates the (Kolmogorov) sum rule expressing the additivity of probabilities of mutually exclusive ev

We approach the issue of exponentiation of soft gauge boson corrections to scattering amplitudes from a path integral point of view. We show that if one represents the amplitude as a first quantized path integral in a mixed coordinate-momentum space representation, a charged particle interacting with a soft gauge field is represented as a Wilson line for a s

In order to account for all possible contractions allowed by the presence of the solder form, a generalized Hodge dual is defined for the case of soldered bundles. Although for curvature the generalized dual coincides with the usual one, for torsion it gives a completely new dual definition. Starting from the standard form of a gauge lagrangian for the trans

We report on a self-consistent calculation of the in-medium spectral functions of the rho and omega mesons at finite baryon density. The corresponding in-medium dilepton spectrum is generated and compared with HADES data. We find that an iterative calculation of the vector meson spectral functions provides a reasonable description of the experimental data.
Beam-helicity asymmetry measurements in the Virtual Compton Scattering reaction in the g*N-Delta transition at Q2=0.20 (GeV/c)^2

We report on new beam-helicity asymmetry measurements (A_h) of the H(\vec{e},e'p)γreaction in the Delta(1232)$ resonance at Q2=0.20 (GeV/c)2. The measurements were performed at MAMI and were carried out simultaneously with the measurement of the H(\vec{e},e'p)π^0 reaction channel. It is the lowest Q2 for which the $A_h$ for the virtual Compton scatte

We derive a basis for the vector space of bounded operators acting on a $d$-dimensional system Hilbert space $C^d$. In the context of quantum computation the basis elements are identified as the generalised Pauli matrices - the error generators. As an application, we show how such matrices are used in the teleportation a single qudit.

We present a convariant formulation for radiative transfer in curved space time and demonstrate some applications in the black-hole systems. We calculate the emission from semi-transparent accretion tori around black holes, for opacity provided by the Fe K lines and for opacity dominated by electron scattering. We also calculate the emission from radiative i

We compute a formula including OPE power corrections to describe the running of a QCD coupling non-perturbatively defined through the ghost and gluon dressing functions. This turns out to be rather accurate. We propose the ``{\it plateau}''-procedure to compute $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ from the lattice computation of the running coupling constant. We show

We investigate the structure of dynamics of large self-gravitating astrophysical systems using a self-interacting two-component model. We consider two cases, galaxy clusters and cosmic walls, for illustrations. In both cases stability analyses are conducted using perturbative expansion. We have found that waves and solitons are easily generated in these syst

We study the performance of a quantum wire spin filter that is based on the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the presence of the electron-electron interaction. The finite length wire is attached to two semi-infinite nonmagnetic leads. Analyzing the spin polarization of the linear conductance at zero temperature, we show that spin-filtering is possible by ade

The possibility of adiabatically cooling a spin-1 polar Bose gas to a spin-nematic phase is theoretically discussed. The relation between the order parameter of the final spin-nematic phase and the starting temperature of the spinor Bose gas is obtained both using the mean-field approach for the high temperature and spin-wave approach for the low temperature
