We present the performance of Multi-gap timing RPCs under irradiation by fully stripped relativistic ions (gamma*beta=2.7, Z=1-6). A time resolution of 80 ps at high efficiency has been obtained by just using standard `off the shelf' 4-gap timing RPCs from the new HADES ToF wall. The resolution worsened to 100 ps for ~ 1 kHz/cm2 proton flux and for ~ 100

A class of C*-algebras is described for which the homomorphism from $C_0(0,1]$ to the algebra may be classified by means of the Cuntz semigroup functor. Examples are given of algebras--simple and non-simple--for which this classification fails. It is shown that a suitable suspension of the Cuntz semigroup functor deals successfully with some of these counter

Dynamical ages of the opposite lobes determined {\sl independently} of each other suggest that their ratios are between $\sim$1.1 to $\sim$1.4. The recently introduced deflected mirage mediation (DMM) model is a string-motivated paradigm in which all three of the major supersymmetry-breaking transmission mechanisms are operative. We find a class of non-relativistic supersymmetric solutions of IIB supergravity with non-trivial B-field that have dynamical exponent n=2 and are invariant under the Schrodinger group. A constant angle surface in Minkowski space is a spacelike surface whose unit normal vector field makes a constant hyperbolic angle with a fixed timelike vector. We consider a two-form antisymmetric tensor field \phi minimally coupled to a non-abelian vector field with a field strength F. We present Coulomb blockade measurements in a graphene double dot system. The coupling of the dots to the leads and between the dots can be tuned by graphene in-plane gates. The coupling is a non-monotonic function of the gate voltage. Using a purely capacitive model, we extract all relevant energy scales of the double dot system.

We measure the effective mass (m*) of interacting two-dimensional electrons confined to a 4.5 nm-wide AlAs quantum well. We derive on the level of quantum optics expressions for the uncertainty of the photocount in a multi-mode multi-frequency setup. We present results from a systematic study of the hyperfine (HF) structure of antiprotonic helium where we have achieved a precision more than a factor of 10 better than our first measurement. A comparison between the experimenta

The infrared (IR) reflectivity spectra of orthorhombic manganese perovskites PrMnO$_3$ and CaMnO$_3$ are studied in the frequency range of optical phonon modes at temperatures varying from 300 to 4 K. The IR phonon spectra of these two materials are analyzed by a fitting procedure based on a Lorentz model, and assigned to definite vibrational modes of $Pnma$

This paper proposes a practical successive decoding scheme with finite levels for the finite-state Markov channels where there is no a priori state information at the transmitter or the receiver. The design employs either a random interleaver or a deterministic interleaver with an irregular pattern and an optional iterative estimation and decoding procedure
On the observed distributions of black hole masses and Eddington ratios from radiation pressure corrected virial indicators

The application of the virial theorem to the Broad Line Region of Active Galactic Nuclei allows Black Hole mass estimates for large samples of objects at all redshifts. In a recent paper we showed that ionizing radiation pressure onto BLR clouds affects virial BH mass estimates and we provided empirically calibrated corrections. More recently, a new test of

We study the BPS invariants of the preferred Calabi-Yau resolution of ADE polyhedral singularities C^3/G given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert schemes. Genus 0 BPS invariants are defined by means of the moduli space of torsion sheaves as proposed by Sheldon Katz. We show that these invariants are equal to half the number of certain positive roots of an ADE root

In this work we use the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method to calculate the transition probabilities for all possible decay channels, radiative and radiationless, of a K shell vacancy in Zn, Cd and Hg atoms. The obtained transition probabilities are then used to calculate the corresponding fluorescence yields which are compared to existing theoretical, sem
Spectroscopic studies on nanocomposites obtained by functionalization of carbon nanotubes with conducting polymers
cond-mat.mtrl-sciS. Lefrant, M. Baibarac, I. Baltog
Vibrational properties of composites based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conducting polymers of the type polyaniline (PANI) and poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) are reported. For PANI-functionalized SWNTs, the intensity increase of the Raman band at 178 cm-1, associated with radial breathing modes of SWNTs bundles, indicates an addi

The surface code scheme for quantum computation features a 2d array of nearest-neighbor coupled qubits yet claims a threshold error rate approaching 1% (NJoP 9:199, 2007). This result was obtained for the toric code, from which the surface code is derived, and surpasses all other known codes restricted to 2d nearest-neighbor architectures by several orders o

In this article, we investigate a density problem coming from the linearization of Calderón's problem with partial data. More precisely, we prove that the set of products of harmonic functions on a bounded smooth domain $Ω$ vanishing on any fixed closed proper subset of the boundary are dense in $L^{1}(Ω)$ in all dimensions $n \geq 2$. This is proved usi

Low lying scalar resonances emerge as a necessary part to adjust chiral perturbation theory to experimental data once unitarity constraint is taken into consideration. I review recent progress made in this direction in a model independent approach. Also I briefly review studies on the odd physical properties of these low lying scalar resonances, including in

We investigate the viscous Ricci dark energy (RDE) model by assuming that there is bulk viscosity in the linear barotropic fluid and the RDE. In the RDE model without bulk viscosity, the universe is younger than some old objects at some redshifts. Since the age of the universe should be longer than any objects in the universe, the RDE model suffers the age p

We use neutron scattering to study the spin and lattice structures of single crystal and powder samples of Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs ($T_c = 23$ K). On cooling from room temperature, the system goes through a series of phase transitions: first changing the crystal symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic at 49 K, then ordering antiferromagnetically with a spin structur

We propose a new method for the classification of optically dark gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), based on the X-ray and optical-to-X-ray spectral indices of GRB afterglows, and utilizing the spectral capabilities of Swift. This method depends less on model assumptions than previous methods, and can be used as a quick diagnostic tool to identify optically sub-lumino
