Review of recent results on streamer discharges and discussion of their relevance for sprites and lightning
physics.ao-phUte Ebert, Sander Nijdam, Chao Li, Alejandro Luque
It is by now well understood that large sprite discharges at the low air densities of the mesosphere are physically similar to small streamer discharges in air at standard temperature and pressure. This similarity is based on Townsend scaling with air density. First the theoretical basis of Townsend scaling and a list of six possible corrections to scaling a

Singularities of the susceptibility of an SRB measure in the presence of stable-unstable tangencies
nlin.CDDavid Ruelle
Let $ρ$ be an SRB (or "physical"), measure for the discrete time evolution given by a map $f$, and let $ρ(A)$ denote the expectation value of a smooth function $A$. If $f$ depends on a parameter, the derivative $δρ(A)$ of $ρ(A)$ with respect to the parameter is formally given by the value of the so-called susceptibility function $Ψ(z)$ at $z=1$. When

The most general nonuniform reaction-diffusion models on a one-dimensional lattice with boundaries, for which the time evolution equations of corre- lation functions are closed, are considered. It is well known that the description of topological and geometric properties of bisectors in normed spaces is a non-trivial subject. The asymptotic properties of Eulerian numbers and refined Eulerian numbers: A Spline perspective
math.CORenhong Wang, Yan Xu
In this paper, the asymptotic formulas for Eulerian numbers, refined Eulerian numbers and the coefficients of descent polynomials are obtained directly from the spline interpretations of these numbers. Having related these numbers directly to B-splines [15], we can take advantage of many powerful spline techniques to derive various results of these numbers.

We establish a theoretical framework for artificial control of the power-law singularities in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid states. We consider a delay differential equation that occurs in the study of chronic myelogenous leukemia. After shortly reminding some previous results concerning the stability of equilibrium solutions, we concentrate on the study of stability of periodic solutions emerged by Hopf bifurcation from a certain equilibrium point. We give the algorithm for approximatin

The negative parity bands in $^{220}$Th are analyzed within the dinuclear system model which was previously used for describing the alternating-parity bands in deformed actinides. The model is based on the assumption that cluster type shapes are produced by the motion of nuclear system in the mass-asymmetry coordinate. To describe the reflection-asymmetric c
The matter Lagrangian and the energy-momentum tensor in modified gravity with non-minimal coupling between matter and geometry
gr-qcT. Harko
We show that in modified $f(R)$ type gravity models with non-minimal coupling between matter and geometry, both the matter Lagrangian, and the energy-momentum tensor, are completely and uniquely determined by the form of the coupling. This result is obtained by using the variational formulation for the derivation of the equations of motion in the modified gr
Reactions of C$_2$({\it a}$^3Pi_u$) with selected saturated alkanes: A temperature dependence study
physics.chem-phRenzhi Hu, Qun Zhang, Yang Chen
We present a temperature dependence study on the gas phase reactions of the C$_2$({\it a}$^3Pi_u$) radical with a selected series of saturated alkanes (C$_2$H$_6$, C$_3$H$_8$, n-C$_4$H$_10$, i-C$_4$H$_10$, and n-C$_6$H$_14$) by means of pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence technique. The bimolecular rate constants for these reactions were obtai

We analyze by exact Renormalization Group (RG) methods the infrared properties of an effective model of graphene, in which two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions propagating with a velocity smaller than the speed of light interact with a three-dimensional quantum electromagnetic field. The fermionic correlation functions are written as series in the running

There has been much success in describing the limiting spatial fluctuations of growth models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. A proper rescaling of time should introduce a non-trivial temporal dimension to these limiting fluctuations. In one-dimension, the KPZ class has the dynamical scaling exponent $z=3/2$, that means one should find a

We study the quark number susceptibility in holographic QCD with a finite chemical potential or under an external magnetic field at finite temperature. We first consider the quark number susceptibility with the chemical potential. We observe that approaching the critical temperature from high temperature regime, the quark number susceptibility divided by tem

The operation principles of nanoscale devices are based upon both electronic and mechanical properties of materials. Because these properties can be coupled, they need to be investigated simultaneously. At this moment, however, the electronic structure calculations with custom-made long-range mechanical distortions are impossible, or expensive at best. Here

This dissertation presents investigations on dynamics of discrete-time quantum walk and some of its applications. Quantum walks has been exploited as an useful tool for quantum algorithms in quantum computing. Beyond quantum computational purposes, it has been used to explain and control the dynamics in various physical systems. In order to use the quantum w

We inspect the relationship between relative Fourier multipliers on noncommutative Lebesgue-Orlicz spaces of a discrete group and relative Toeplitz-Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann-Orlicz classes. Four applications are given: lacunary sets; unconditional Schauder bases for the subspace of a Lebesgue space determined by a given spectrum, that is, by
Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
hep-exThe BESIII Collaboration
The decay channel $\psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p})$ is studied using a sample of $1.06\times 10^8$ $\psi^\prime$ events collected by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is observed in the $p\bar{p}$ invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit with an $S$-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with
Vortex structures and zero energy states in the BCS-to-BEC evolution of p-wave resonant Fermi gases
cond-mat.quant-gasT. Mizushima, K. Machida
Multiply quantized vortices in the BCS-to-BEC evolution of p-wave resonant Fermi gases are investigated theoretically. The vortex structure and the low-energy quasiparticle states are discussed, based on the self-consistent calculations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes and gap equations. We reveal the direct relation between the macroscopic structure of vortices,

Recently Verlinde proposed that gravity is an entropic force caused by information changes when a material body moves away from the holographic screen. In this note we apply this argument to brane cosmology, and show that the cosmological equation can be derived from this holographic scenario.

Given a factor code $π$ from a one-dimensional shift of finite type $X$ onto an irreducible sofic shift $Y$, if $π$ is finite-to-one there is an invariant called the degree of $π$ which is defined the number of preimages of a typical point in $Y$. We generalize the notion of the degree to the class degree which is defined for any factor code on a one-dimensi

We extend a recently developed galaxy morphology classification method, Quantitative Multiwavelength Morphology (QMM), to connect galaxy morphologies to their underlying physical properties. The traditional classification of galaxies approaches the problem separately through either morphological classification or, in more recent times, through analysis of ph
