We study indented spherical colloids, interacting via depletion forces. These systems exhibit liquid-vapor phase transitions whose properties are determined by a combination of strong "lock-and-key" bonds and weaker non-specific interactions. As the propensity for lock-and-key binding increases, the critical point moves to significantly lower density

Motivated by a recent work of X. Chen and M. Zhu (Commun. Math. Stat., 1 (2013) 369-385), we establish a Trudinger-Moser inequality on compact Riemannian surface without boundary. The proof is based on blow-up analysis together with Carleson-Chang's result (Bull. Sci. Math. 110 (1986) 113-127). This inequality is different from the classical one, which i

User engagement refers to the amount of interaction an instance (e.g., tweet, news, and forum post) achieves. Ranking the items in social media websites based on the amount of user participation in them, can be used in different applications, such as recommender systems. We consider the neutral inclusion problem in three dimensions which is to prove if a coated structure consisting of a core and a shell is neutral to all uniform fields, then the core and the shell must be concentric balls if the matrix is isotropic and confocal ellipsoids if the matrix is anisotropic. We first derive an over-determined boundary value problem

A finite word u is said to be bordered if u has a proper prefix which is also a suffix of u, and unbordered otherwise. Ehrenfeucht and Silberger proved that an infinite word is purely periodic if and only if it contains only finitely many unbordered factors. We are interested in abelian and weak abelian analogues of this result; namely, we investigate the fo

The fluid-structure interaction is studied for a system composed of two coaxial pipes in an annular geometry, for both homogeneous isotropic metal pipes and fiber-reinforced (anisotropic) pipes. Multiple waves, traveling at different speeds and amplitudes, result when a projectile impacts on the water filling the annular space between the pipes. In the case

The maximum genus $γ_M(G)$ of a graph G is the largest genus of an orientable surface into which G has a cellular embedding. Combinatorially, it coincides with the maximum number of disjoint pairs of adjacent edges of G whose removal results in a connected spanning subgraph of G. In this paper we prove that removing pairs of adjacent edges from G arbitrarily

Raptor codes have been widely used in many multimedia broadcast/multicast applications. However, our understanding of Raptor codes is still incomplete due to the insufficient amount of theoretical work on the performance analysis of Raptor codes, particularly under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding, which provides an optimal benchmark on the system performanc

The non-Markovianity is a prominent concept of the dynamics of the open quantum systems, which is of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics and quantum information. Despite of lots of efforts, the experimentally measuring of non-Markovianity of an open system is still limited to very small systems. Presently, it is still impossible to experimentally qua

The Survey of HI in Extremely Low-mass Dwarfs (SHIELD) is an on-going multi-wavelength program to characterize the gas, star formation, and evolution in gas-rich, very low-mass galaxies that populate the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. The galaxies were selected from the first ~10% of the HI ALFALFA survey based on their low HI mass and low bary

Two moment-matching methods for model reduction of linear switched systems (LSSs) are presented. The methods are similar to the Krylov subspace methods used for moment matching for linear systems. The more general one of the two methods, is based on the so called "nice selection" of some vectors in the reachability or observability space of the LSS.

This paper develops a new class of exponential-type integrators where all the matrix exponentiations are performed in a single Krylov space of low dimension. The new family, called Lightly Implicit Krylov-Exponential (LIKE), is well suited for solving large scale systems of ODEs or semi-discrete PDEs. The time discretization and the Krylov space approximatio

This paper develops a new class of Rosenbrock-type integrators based on a Krylov space solution of the linear systems. The new family, called Rosenbrock-Krylov (Rosenbrock-K), is well suited for solving large scale systems of ODEs or semi-discrete PDEs. The time discretization and the Krylov space approximation are treated as a single computational process,

The interaction of ultra-intense lasers with solid foils can be used to accelerate ions to high energies well exceeding 60 MeV. The non-linear relativistic motion of electrons in the intense laser radiation leads to their acceleration and later to the acceleration of ions. Ions can be accelerated from the front surface, the foil interior region, and the foil

We simulate three-dimensional, horizontally periodic Rayleigh-Bénard convection between free-slip horizontal plates, rotating about a distant horizontal axis. When both the temperature difference between the plates and the rotation rate are sufficiently large, a strong horizontal wind is generated that is perpendicular to both the rotation vector and the gra

We consider the gravitational correction to (electronic) vacuum polarization in the presence of a gravitational background field. The Dirac propagators for the virtual fermions are modified to include the leading gravitational correction (potential term) which corresponds to a coordinate-dependent fermion mass. The mass term is assumed to be uniform over a l

We report on the modification of the g-factor by an in-plane electric field in an In$_{0.031}$Ga$_{0.969}$As epilayer. We performed external magnetic field scans of the Kerr rotation of the InGaAs film in order to independently determine the g-factor and the spin-orbit fields. The g-factor increases from $-0.4473\pm0.0001$ at 0 V/cm to $-0.4419\pm0.0001$ at

We show that a compact orientable 4-manifold M has a CR regular immersion into C3 if and only if both its first Pontryagin class and its Euler characteristic vanish, and has a CR regular embedding into C3 if and only if in addition the second Stiefel-Whitney class of M vanishes.

We obtain an effective version of Matsusaka's theorem for arbitrary smooth algebraic surfaces in positive characteristic, which provides an effective bound on the multiple which makes an ample line bundle D very ample. The proof for pathological surfaces is based on a Reider-type theorem. As a consequence, a Kawamata-Viehweg-type vanishing theorem is pro

We analyze incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) and pair-density-wave (PDW) orders with transferred momenta $(\pm Q,0)$/$(0,\pm Q)$ in underdoped cuprates within the spin-fermion model. Both orders appear due to exchange of spin fluctuations before magnetic order develops. We argue that the ordered state with the lowest energy has non-zero CDW and PDW com

The Kepler mission discovered 2842 exoplanet candidates with 2 years of data. We provide updates to the Kepler planet candidate sample based upon 3 years (Q1-Q12) of data. Through a series of tests to exclude false-positives, primarily caused by eclipsing binary stars and instrumental systematics, 855 additional planetary candidates have been discovered, bri

Twisting symmetries provides an efficient method to diagnose symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. In this paper, edge theories of (2+1)-dimensional topological phases protected by reflection as well as other symmetries are studied by twisting reflection symmetry, which effectively puts the edge theories on an unoriented spacetime, such as the Klein b

The formation of Ps in our Galaxy is well measured, and has led to important and unanswered questions on the origin of the positrons. In principle it should be possible to form analogous systems from mu and tau leptons, viz. true muonium and true tauonium. However the probability of formation for these systems is greatly reduced due to the intrinsically shor
