We propose iterative inversion algorithms for weighted Radon transforms $R_W$ along hyperplanes in $R^3$. More precisely, expandingthe weight $W = W (x, θ), x \in R^3 , θ\in S^2$ , into the series of spherical harmonics in $θ$ and assuming that the zero order term $w_{0,0}(x)$ is not zero at any $x \in R^3$ , we reduce the inversion of $R_W$ to solving a lin

We discuss the question of whether or not a general Weyl structure is a suitable mathematical model of space-time. This is an issue that has been in debate since Weyl formulated his unified field theory for the first time. We study the thermal phase transitions of charged black holes in dimensionally continued gravity in anti-de Sitter space. We find the van der Waals-like phase transition in the temperature-entropy plane of the black holes with spherical horizons in even dimensions, and there is no such phase transition of the black holes with flat and hyperbolic geometries.

Net neutrality on the Internet is perceived as the policy that mandates Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to treat all data equally, regardless of the source, destination, or type of transmitted data. We describe a new method called t-ETE for finding a low-dimensional embedding of a set of objects in Euclidean space. We formulate the embedding problem as a joint ranking problem over a set of triplets, where each triplet captures the relative similarities between three objects in the set. By exploiting recent advances in robust ranking, t-ETE produces high

Low ($\lesssim 1\%$) levels of circular polarization (CP) detected at radio frequencies in the relativistic jets of some blazars can provide insight into the underlying nature of the jet plasma. CP can be produced through linear birefringence, in which initially linearly polarized emission produced in one region of the jet is altered by Faraday rotation as i

Blazars exhibit flares across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Many $γ$-ray flares are highly correlated with flares detected at longer wavelengths; however, a small subset appears to occur in isolation, with little or no correlated variability at longer wavelengths. These "orphan" $γ$-ray flares challenge current models of blazar variability, mo

The reconstruction of phylogenetic trees from discrete character data typically relies on models that assume the characters evolve under a continuous-time Markov process operating at some overall rate $λ$. When $λ$ is too high or too low, it becomes difficult to distinguish a short interior edge from a polytomy (the tree that results from collapsing the edge
UV-sensitive superconducting nanowire single photon detectors for integration in an ion trap
quant-phD. H. Slichter, V. B. Verma, D. Leibfried, R. P. Mirin
We demonstrate superconducting nanowire single photon detectors with 76 +/- 4 % system detection efficiency at a wavelength of 315 nm and an operating temperature of 3.2 K, with a background count rate below 1 count per second at saturated detection efficiency. We propose integrating these detectors into planar surface electrode radio-frequency Paul traps fo
Contextualizing Geometric Data Analysis and Related Data Analytics: A Virtual Microscope for Big Data Analytics
cs.AIFionn Murtagh, Mohsen Farid
The relevance and importance of contextualizing data analytics is described. Qualitative characteristics might form the context of quantitative analysis. Topics that are at issue include: contrast, baselining, secondary data sources, supplementary data sources, dynamic and heterogeneous data. In geometric data analysis, especially with the Correspondence Ana

We show that the Feynman propagator (or the d'Alembertian) of a causal set contains the complete information about the causal set. Intuitively, this is because the Feynman propagator, being a correlator that decays with distance, provides a measure for the invariant distance between pairs of events. Further, we show that even the spectra alone (of the se

Understanding the dynamics by which urban areas attract visitors is significant for urban development in cities. In addition, identifying services that relate to highly attractive districts is useful to make policies regarding the placement of such places. Thus, we present a framework for classifying districts in cities by their attractiveness to visitors, a

In quantum gravity space and time lose their status as fundamental parts of the physical reality. However, according to Kant, space and time are the a priori conditions of our experience. Does Kantian characterization of these notions give constraints to quantum gravity, or does quantum gravity make Kantian characterization of space and time an invalid appro

We report an efficient method to observe single photon emissions in monolayer WSe2 by applying hydrostatic pressure. The photoluminescence peaks of typical two-dimensional (2D) excitons show a nearly identical pressure-induced blue-shift, whereas the energy of pressure-induced discrete emission lines (quantum emitters) demonstrates a pressure insensitive beh
No equations, no parameters, no variables: data, and the reconstruction of normal forms by learning informed observation geometries
nlin.PSOr Yair, Ronen Talmon, Ronald R. Coifman, Ioannis G. Kevrekidis
The discovery of physical laws consistent with empirical observations lies at the heart of (applied) science and engineering. These laws typically take the form of nonlinear differential equations depending on parameters, dynamical systems theory provides, through the appropriate normal forms, an "intrinsic", prototypical characterization of the type

The first part of this report describes the following result that, logarithmic approximation factor for hard capacitated set cover can be achieved from Wolsey's work [9], using a simpler and more intuitive analysis. We further show in our work, that O(log n) approximation factor can be achieved for the same problem by applying analysis of general set cov

Since more than a century astronomers measure the position angle of the major axis of the polarization ellipse starting from the North direction and increasing counter-clockwise, when looking at the source. This convention has been enforced by the IAU with a Resolution in 1973. Much later the WMAP satellite, which has observed the polarization of the cosmic

Optimization of Lamb modes induced by laser can be achieved by adjusting the spatial source distribution to the mode wavelength ($λ$). The excitability of Zero-Group Velocity (ZGV) resonances in isotropic plates is investigated both theoretically and experimentally for axially symmetric sources. Optimal parameters and amplitude gains are derived analytically

A simulation of the hydrodynamics on the two dimensional non-commutative space is performed, in which the space coordinates $(x, y)$ are non-commutative, satisfying the commutation relation $[x, y]=i θ$. The Navier-Stokes equation has an extra force term which reflects the non-commutativity of the space, being proportional to $θ^2$. This parameter $θ$ is rel
Probabilistic Broken-Stick Model: A Regression Algorithm for Irregularly Sampled Data with Application to eGFR

In order for clinicians to manage disease progression and make effective decisions about drug dosage, treatment regimens or scheduling follow up appointments, it is necessary to be able to identify both short and long-term trends in repeated biomedical measurements. However, this is complicated by the fact that these measurements are irregularly sampled and

The aim of this paper is to prove characterization theorems for higher order derivations. Among others we prove that the system defining higher order derivations is stable. Further characterization theorems in the spirit of N.~G.~de Bruijn will also be presented.

A set $C$ of vertices of a simple graph is called a completely regular code if for each $i=0$, $1$, $2$, \ldots and $j = i-1$, $i$, $i+1$, all vertices at distance $i$ from $C$ have the same number $s_{ij}$ of neighbors at distance $j$ from $C$. We characterize the completely regular codes in the infinite hexagonal grid graph.
