Influence of Laguerre-Gaussian pulse mode purity on positron acceleration in nonlinear wakefields
Lars Reichwein
Abstract
The acceleration of positrons in wakefields remains a crucial challenge. One proposal has been to use Laguerre-Gaussian laser pulses as drivers, which provide corresponding accelerating and focusing regions due to their inherent field structure. Here, we study the effect of mode order and mode purity on the acceleration process by means of particle-in-cell simulations. We find that some mode impurities can be mitigated during the propagation of the wake through the plasma, but also that phase difference between the modes that the total pulse is composed of can strongly affect the acceleration process.
