We introduce a generalized Maximum Abelian Gauge (MAG). We work with this new gauge on 12^4 lattices for beta=5.7,5.8 and 16^4 lattices for beta=5.9,6.0. We also introduce a form of abelian projection related to the generalized MAG. We measure U(1)xU(1) wilson loops and single color magnetic current densities.

We study the singlet and non-singlet scalar-meson masses using domain wall fermions and the quenched approximation. The tau -> mu nu nu branching ratio has been measured using data collected from 1990 to 1995 by the OPAL detector at the LEP collider. The resulting value of B(tau->mu nu nu) = 0.1734 +/- 0.0009(stat) +/- 0.0005(syst) has been used in conjunction with other OPAL measurements to test lepton universality, yielding the coupling constant ratios g(mu)/g(e) = 1.00

The present understanding of large mass MSSM Higgs sector is reviewed. The most profitable channels: A/H $\to ττ$ and $H^{\pm} \to τν$ are considered; a glimpse of the trigger chain studied for events with tau lepton final states is presented. The MSSM Higgs discovery reach of the general-purpouse experiment CMS is summarised.

Conceptual tensions between quantum mechanics and general relativity: Are there experimental consequences, e.g., superconducting transducers between electromagnetic and gravitational radiation?
gr-qcRaymond Y. Chiao
One of the conceptual tensions between quantum mechanics (QM) and general relativity (GR) arises from the clash between the spatial nonseparability of entangled states in QM, and the complete spatial separability of all physical systems in GR, i.e., between the nonlocality implied by the superposition principle, and the locality implied by the equivalence pr

It is noted that the standard definition of the fractional Laplacian leads to a hyper-singular convolution integral and is also obscure about how to implement the boundary conditions. This purpose of this note is to introduce a new definition of the fractional Laplacian to overcome these major drawbacks.

The critical behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau model is described in a manifestly gauge-invariant manner. We compute the pressure and entropy of hot QCD in the limit of large number of fermions, N_f >> N_c ~ 1, to next to leading order in N_f. At this order the calculation can be done exactly, up to ambiguities due to the presence of a Landau pole in the theory; the ambiguities are O(T^8/Λ^4_{Landau}) and remain negligible long after the perturbative series (in

The partition function for unitary two matrix models is known to be a double KP tau-function, as well as providing solutions to the two dimensional Toda hierarchy. It is shown how it may also be viewed as a Borel sum regularization of divergent sums over products of Schur functions in the two sequences of associated KP flow variables.

We discuss the worldvolume description of intersecting D-branes, including the metric on the moduli space of deformations. We impose a choice of static gauge that treats all the branes on an equal footing and describes the intersection of D-branes as an embedded special Lagrangian three-surface. Some explicit solutions to these equations are given and their

We present a method to measure the weak phase gamma in the three-body decay of charged B mesons to the final states D K pi0. These decays are mediated by interfering amplitudes which are color-allowed and hence relatively large. As a result, large CP violation effects that could be observed with high statistical significance are possible. In addition, the th

X-ray transition radiation can be used to measure the Lorentz factor of relativistic particles. Standard transition radiation detectors (TRDs) typically incorporate thin plastic foil radiators and gas-filled x-ray detectors, and are sensitive up to γ~ 10^4. To reach higher Lorentz factors (up to γ~ 10^5), thicker, denser radiators can be used, which conseque

If the observed deficit of solar neutrinos is due to neutrino oscillations, neutrino conversions caused by the interaction of their transition magnetic moments with the solar magnetic field (spin-flavour precession) can still be present at a subdominant level. In that case, the combined action of neutrino oscillations and spin-flavour precession can lead to

We show that the integral of the first Pontrjagin class is given by an integer and it is identified with instanton number of the U(n) gauge theory on noncommutative ${\bf R^4}$. Here the dimension of the vector space $V$ that appear in the ADHM construction is called Instanton number. The calculation is done in operator formalism and the first Pontrjagin cla

Magnetotransport measurements performed on several well-characterized highly oriented pyrolitic graphite and single crystalline Kish graphite samples reveal a reentrant metallic behavior in the basal-plane resistance at high magnetic fields, when only the lowest Landau levels are occupied. The results suggest that the quantum Hall effect and Landau-level-qua

We introduce the notion of the cosmic numbers of a cosmological model, and discuss how they can be used to naturally classify models according to their ability to solve some of the problems of the standard cosmological model.

We present the generalization of the Sedov-Taylor self-similar strong spherical shock solution for the case of a central energy source varying in time, $E=A t^k$, where $A$ and $k$ are constants. The known Sedov-Taylor solution corresponds to a particular adiabatic case of $k=0$ or \emph{instant shock} with an instant energy source of the shock, $E=A$. The s

The study of high energy nuclear collisions has entered a new stage with RHIC; it therefore seems a good time to ask what we have learned from the experimental results obtained up to now. I recall what we had expected to find when the SPS and AGS programs were started, summarize what actually was found, and then try to assess what we have learned from the re

We report on the spectroscopic and photometric analysis of possible optical counterparts to four X-ray sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud: AX J0049.4-7323, AX J0057.4-7325, RX J0058.2-7321 and RX J0101.1-7206. In the case of the last two, we suggest that the presence of strong Halpha emission from previously proposed optical candidates is definite confirm

It is shown that the four $(3 + 1)$-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory provides an example of (i) a class of field theoretical models for the Hodge theory, and (ii) a possible candidate for the quasi-topological field theory (q-TFT). Despite many striking similarities with some of the key topological features of the two $(1 + 1)$-dimensional (

The characterization of the long-range order and fractal properties of DNA sequences has proved a difficult though highly rewarding task due mainly to the mosaic character of DNA consisting of many interwoven patches of various lengths with different nucleotide constitutions. We apply here a recently proposed generalization of the detrended fluctuation analy

The $ϕ$-meson production cross section is measured for the first time at a sub-threshold energy of 1.93 AGeV in \nuc{58}{Ni}+\nuc{58}{Ni} central collisions. The $ϕ$ data were obtained within the acceptance of the CDC/Barrel subsystem of FOPI. For a sample of $4.7\cdot 10^6$ central events, after background subtraction, 23 candidates were observed. The Schwinger-boson mean-field theory is used to study the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering and excitations in compounds $L_2BaNiO_5$, a large family of quasi-one-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnet. To investigate magnetic properties of these compounds, we introduce a three-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model based on ex

We calculate (g-2)/2 of the muon, by improving the determination of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution, a_mu^{had,LO}, and its uncertainties. The different e+e- data sets for each exclusive (and the inclusive) channel are combined in order to obtain the optimum estimate of the cross sections and their uncertainties. QCD sum rules are evaluated in

We calculate the electroweak and finite width corrections to the decay of an unpolarized top quark into a bottom quark and a $ W $-gauge boson where the helicities of the $ W $ are specified as longitudinal, transverse-plus and transverse-minus. Together with the $ O(α_s) $ corrections these corrections may become relevant for the determination of the mass o
