We present the first INTEGRAL results on Cyg X-3 from the PV phase observations of the Cygnus region. The source was clearly detected by the JEM-X, ISGRI and SPI detectors. The INTEGRAL observations were supported by simultaneous pointed RXTE observations. Their lightcurves folded over the 4.8 hour binary period are compatible with the mean RXTE/ASM and CGRO

We report XMM-Newton observations of the eclipsing binary Algol A (B8V) and B (K2III). The XMM-Newton data cover the phase interval 0.35 - 0.58, i.e., specifically the time of optical secondary minimum, when the X-ray dark B-type star occults a major fraction of the X-ray bright K-type star. During the eclipse a flare was observed with complete light curve c

For high temperatures and densities, stellar opacities obtained from the Opacity Project (OP) were smaller than those obtained from the OPAL project. Iglesias and Rogers [Ap.J. v443, 469 (1995)] suggested that the discrepancy was due to the omission by OP of important atomic inner-shell processes, and considered in detail results for a mixture of 6 elements:

Impressed by the widespread misunderstanding of the issue, we return to the old question of the location of the inner edge of accretion disk around black hole. We recall the fundamental results obtained in the 1970's and 1980's by Warsaw and Kyoto research groups that proved, in particular, that the inner edge does not coincide with the location of t

I continue my study of the low-z Lyman alpha cloud population. Previously I showed how galaxy catalogs are used to attribute relative degrees of isolation to those clouds found in HST/GHRS spectra. I find that there exist two distinct populations corresponding to two distinct environments, variously characterized as void (unshocked) and non-void (shocked). V

New two- and three-dimensional calculations are presented of relativistic jet propagation and break out in massive Wolf-Rayet stars. Such jets are thought responsible for gamma-ray bursts. As it erupts, the jet is surrounded by a cocoon of less energetic, but still highly relativistic ejecta that expands and becomes visible at much larger polar angles. These

We describe a quasi-equilibrium profile of dark matter particles in the inner parsec of the Galaxy, rho ~ r^-3/2. This "mini-cusp" profile is caused by scattering with the dense stellar cluster around the supermassive black hole in Sgr A* and is independent of the initial conditions. A Ginzburg-Landau-like functional is proposed reproducing the main low-energy features of various possible high-Tc superconducting mechanisms involving energy savings due to interlayer interactions. For many-particle systems, quantum information in base n can be defined by partitioning the set of states according to the outcomes of n-ary (joint) observables. Thereby, k particles can carry k nits. With regards to the randomness of single outcomes, a context translation principle is proposed. Quantum randomness is related to the uncontrollable degrees of

General relativity is extended by promoting the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons term to four dimensions. We study the possibility to undo the quantum mechanical evolution in a time reversal experiment. The naive expectation, as reflected in the common terminology ("Loschmidt echo"), is that maximum compensation results if the reversed dynamics extends to the same time as the forward evolution. A spin-orbital chain with different Landé $g$ factors and one-ion anisotropy is studied in the context of the thermodynamical Bethe ansatz. It is found that there exists a magnetization plateau resulting from the different Landé $g$ factors. Detailed phase diagram in the presence of an external magnetic field is presented both numerically and analytically. F

Finite-size scaling functions are investigated both for the mean-square magnetization fluctuations and for the probability distribution of the magnetization in the one-dimensional Ising model. The scaling functions are evaluated in the limit of the temperature going to zero (T -> 0), the size of the system going to infinity (N -> oo) while N[1-tanh(J/k_BT)]

We introduce a Monte-Carlo algorithm for the simulation of charged particles moving in the continuum. Electrostatic interactions are not instantaneous as in conventional approaches, but are mediated by a constrained, diffusing electric field on an interpolating lattice. We discuss the theoretical justifications of the algorithm and show that it efficiently e

We report site-selective oxygen isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect (OIE) measurements on the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab} $ in underdoped Y$_{0.6}$Pr$_{0.4}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$, using the muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique. A pronounced OIE on the transition temperature $T_c$ as well as on $λ_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed, which mainly arises from the

The general fluctuation theory is reviewed with special attention to the role played by different ensembles, and is extended to incorporate stationary metastable states obtained in the long time limit. The fluctuation in a quantity depends on the nature of the ensemble and contains at most n different fluctuation contributions, where is the number of fluctua

The 1995 model of Bonabeau et al. explains the emergence of social hierarchies through randomness, but gives as many leaders as followers. A simple modification allows a more realistic asymmetry with much less leaders.

We generalize a recently investigated lattice model of semiflexible polymers formed under equilibrium polymerization in a solution and conduct a comprehensive investigation of its melting properties. The model is characterized by six energies, three of which are for the interaction between the middle-group, the end-group and the solvent, and the remaining th

The bare chi characterizing polymer blends plays a significant role in their macroscopic description. Therefore, its experimental determination, especially from small-angle-neutron-scattering experiments on isotopic blends, is of prime importance in thermodynamic investigations. Experimentally extracted quantity, commonly known as the effective chi is affect

A microscopic Ioffe-Pritchard trap is formed using a straight, current-carrying wire, together with suitable auxiliary magnetic fields. By measuring the distribution of cold rubidium atoms held in this trap, we detect a weak magnetic field component $ΔB_z$ parallel to the wire. This field is proportional to the current in the wire and is approximately period

We calculate, through Monte Carlo numerical simulations, the partial total and direct correlation functions of the three dimensional symmetric Widom-Rowlinson mixture. We find that the differences between the partial direct correlation functions from simulation and from the Percus-Yevick approximation (calculated analytically by Ahn and Lebowitz) are well fi

The ground state phases of a one-dimensional SU(4) spin-orbital Hamiltonian in a generalized external field are studied on the basis of Bethe-ansatz solution. Introducing three Landé $g$ factors for spin, orbital and their products in the SU(4) Zeeman term, we discuss systematically the various symmetry breaking. The magnetization versus external field are o

Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates is described. We numerically obtain the Bogoliubov-deGenne quasiparticle excitations for a broad range of energies and analyze them in the context of the complex dynamics of the system. A powerful method for mobility spectrum analysis is presented, based on Bryan's maximum entropy algorithm. The Bayesian analysis central to Bryan's algorithm ensures that we avoid overfitting of data, resulting in a physically reasonable solution. We have used the technique of small-angle neutron scattering to observe magnetic flux lines directly in an YBCO single crystal at fields higher than previously reported. For field directions close to perpendicular to the CuO2 planes, we find that the flux lattice structure changes smoothly from a distorted triangular co-ordination to nearly perfectly square
