Plasmoid Instability in Inhomogeneous Current Sheets
Kazuma Ikeda, Ryusuke Numata
Abstract
Plasmoid instability in inhomogeneous current sheets is investigated using electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection. Simulations with and without small random perturbations are compared to examine the effects of symmetry breaking and spatial inhomogeneity. The current-sheet width immediately before disruption remains close to the electron skin depth, whereas the disruption aspect ratio varies significantly between primary and later current sheets. Random perturbations also produce asymmetric plasmoid topologies in which neighboring X points no longer share a common separatrix. These results suggest that spatial inhomogeneity is an important factor in the disruption of dynamically evolving current sheets.
